The cloaked figure sprinted down the street. Shouts and footsteps rang out behind, but they were slowly being outdistanced. The city guard were good, but they couldn't keep up. The figure kept running, a bundle clutched tight to its chest. It glanced back for an instant. The pursuing guards were far out of sight, but looking ahead again, the it nearly ran into another guard. The guard spread arms wide to intercept the fleeing figure, but with what seemed impossible speed the figure dodged and ran on. Another shout rang out behind, but soon that guard was far behind as well. Confident that it was unobserved, the figure slipped down an alley.
It waited in the shadows, still clutching the bundle. It was only a matter of time until....
A glow appeared. Soft, pink and purple lights danced, suddenly intensified, and faded. Where they had been, a small man with vibrant robes and a braided beard had appeared. He blinked once or twice. Then, in a crackly voice, he whispered into the darkness.
"Reesa. Reesa? Are you there?"
The cloaked figure stepped out from the shadows. Her hood shadowed her face, but a glimpse satisfied the man that this was indeed his contact.
"You have it?"
"Yes. Wasn't easy to get, though. Had half the city guard chasing me as soon as they caught a glimpse of me."
"Ah. I suppose a few extra pieces of gold might compensa-"
"Yes. It's... harder. They catch sight of me and they all give chase."
“Why do they fear you?”
”Because I can do things they can’t.”
”Like?”
”Mind my own business, for one.”
The man shook his head. This one wasn't the easiest to deal with, especially when she was being secretive. But she did her work well, and the pouch of gold he pulled out was well earned.
