Maira laughed slightly as she finished her tale.
"And that's what I told him 'I don't think of you as a protector. More like a distraction.' He wouldn't stop trying to stand guard over me while I worked! I'm sure he was trying to impress me, but he didn't do a very good job of it."
Reesa giggled, too. She found Maira's story amusing. But her laugh faded away as Maira asked, "What about you? Do you mind telling me a story?"
The younger girl closed her strange eyes. She didn't know if she had any stories she wanted to tell. Many of her most obvious stories would land her in trouble, and she doubted that any of them would be funny. But Maira looked so genuinely and obviously curious to hear a story from her... so she thought for a few minutes, and finally thought of something.
"This is a story I heard out on the streets. Kinda like a warning folk tale sort of thing. So, one time, these two urchins went out on the streets together. They were hungry, and it was a market day, and they were sure they could steal some food without being noticed. So they went to a bread stall, and while one of them asked the price, the other grabbed some bread while the stall's owner was distracted. Then they stopped at a jewelry stall, but they couldn't steal anything there because they were bing watched. Then they stole some food from a meat stall and shared it. Then, since they had been so successful, they tried to steal some candy from the sweets stall. They were caught, and the guards hauled them away. As they were dragged off, one called to the other, 'Well, I can scratch that off my bucket list.' The other replied, 'Who puts getting arrested on their bucket list?" then the first one said, 'Not that. I just wanted to taste a molasses pop.' The End."
Maira chuckled. "Not how I expected that to go, but it was a little funny."
