The two running figures burst from the forest, panting hard. An arrow whistled in behind them, spurring them on. The one in the lead, Benji, called back for his companion to hurry. The young woman had turned off one direction once they were clear of the woods, and Benji had to turn and call her back.
"C'mon, Donna. This way!"
"No, this way! It's more efficient!"
"That way is going to get us killed!"
As he spoke, an arrow whistled out at her and she gave a little yelp. She quickly saw that the men could easily come through the forest there, and turned around to rejoin Benji. They sprinted off again. A few arrows pursued them, but luckily they were not hit, and the pursuers gave up when they saw their intended victims running so quickly out of range. If they had been able to hit one, they might have been able to slow the two down enough to catch up easily, but as it was they decided to wait for more foolish travelers.
Once they were a safe distance away, the two slowed. They were both very much out of breath, and they both collapsed on the side of the road. They pulled food and water from their packs, and ate while they rested. They both felt they had been incredibly lucky not to have been hit.
