Been struggling with drawing a bit lately. But here’s a doodle of a Volcarona (specifically the future Volcarona form of Zorya, my character's Larvesta from one of the few RPs I participate in) and its “Sunburst Mode” - sort of a Battle Bond/Synchro Burst Pseudo-Mega-Evolution “form”.
Just as a “still alive”, really.

You do realize that Egyptian gods have been around long before YGO was even a bad idea, Don't you? xD

The first thing that came to mind when I designed Sunburst Mode was that I wanted it to look somewhat like a form change - not as blatant as, say, a true Mega Evolution (as Volca does not have one), but a bit more dramatic and impressive than, say, the Synchro Bursts of Pokken that are generally just a glowy aura of some kind (or in rare cases, turning into a living tomato). With the idea of Volcarona as a Sun Pokémon in mind - I wanted to take the elements of it that already evoked the sun and emphasize them. The fiery aura around the wings was the first thing that came to mind - it was meant to evoke both solar flares and the long, trailing extensions on the back wings of certain butterfly and moth species.
Volcarona's wings already have a sun-like pattern in its natural state., orange with black spots on them representing sunspots. So my idea was to change their 'surface texture' somewhat to be more in line with what the surface of the sun looks like - this is a still image, but try to picture the sort of convection swirls that you see in time lapse videos of the sun's surface (like this one), complete with spontaneous formation and disappearances of sunspots. I also wanted to add a bit of glow to the wing venation to make it more prominent and to prevent the wings from looking like flat slabs of texture.
After that I felt a bit more glow was also necessary - the antenna margin-lines got it, and then I felt a bit of an inner glow was also needed. I tend to interpret the black spots on Volca's abdomen as large spiracles - the openings of the insect respiratory system found in the abdomen - because surely an insect this large, particularly one that generates flames, requires more oxygen (even though bug-type Pokémon respiratory systems are vastly more efficient than those of their real world counterparts) - and felt that an inner fiery glow would be visible through such.
Lastly - the 'halo' around the head is a reference to Egyptian sun deity symbolism with just a dash of the all-seeing eye or the eye of providence (after all Volcarona has a bit of a seraphic quality to it with the six wings and all). Honestly, it just felt right. ^^Aug 3, 2017PrincessPika, Merciless Medic, Dove_the_Fox and 5 others like this. -
This made my Signita almost spit out his soda when he saw the transition of the Volcarona's Sunburst Mode.
I'm assuming the bottom parts are possibly extra arms and the outer parts are probably going to burn something if it touches it.
This would be an excellent new thing to have along with mega evolutions and other battle bonds. All in all, I would have to say this is perfect artwork.Aug 3, 2017PrincessPika and Dove_the_Fox like this. -
I wish this was a real mechanic in the game. Maybe Fiery Dance gets boosted power and Flame Body has a bigger chance of burning you?
Anyway, nice job!Aug 3, 2017PrincessPika and Dove_the_Fox like this. -
Thank you ^^ It's a little more than a doodle but I like the way it turned out.
