The Mirrors: The Mirrors: Connecting (p10)

Both teenagers were surprised at Leed’s suggestion. How would that even work? Before either had time to arrange their thoughts, Leed walked inside with the book. Rolen quickly took out the nessescary coin to pay the Book-cart Man, and then followed Leed inside. He knew he still had errands to run, but...

The girl stood outside, hesitating. She wasnt the most comfortable with taverns... but she decided to go in anyway. She grudgingly joined the other two at a table, upon which Leed had placed the book. The bard looked up from the book.

“Before we begin, introductions. I am Leed Gartail.”

He looked pointedly at Rolen, signifying he should introduce himself next.

“Rolen Nailoen, Knight in training.”

“Greetings, I am Raylith of house Harsworth, pleased to make your acquaintance, Leed, Rolen.”

She made a kind of sitting bow or curtsey, glaring at Rolen as she talked. There was a slight tension as he met her gaze, broken up quickly by Leed.

“Unless it seems unwise to you, I believe that you two should read this book. It possesses a magical aura, and the title leads me to belive it may be about an important artifact.”

As the younger two looked back to the book, The Royal Crown: Magik of the Mage, they both reached out for it. Rolen waved his hands in a gesture of, ‘by all means, go ahead’. Raylith continued to leer at him, but the expression dropped away into one of sheer surprise as she began to read. After reading silently for a few moments, she handed the book to him, pointing to a paragraph a little ways down.

The Royal Crown is bestowed with many enchantments such as these, but one of the most... well, intricate with which it was bestowed is the Fealty Charm. This mysterious spell causes those who swear fealty to the ruler of Darvenia, or to the Crown of Darvenia, to fall under a Charm which puts them fully under the command of the possessor of the Crown. They are rendered incapable of betraying the possessor, and the Charm is only lifted from a person if the possessor dismisses that one from service.

There was more, but it was enough for Rolen. He looked at Raylith and Leed. From the expression on the former’s face, he guessed that she had come to the same conclusion. The later, however, was completely blank, even after he had read it.

“It is interesting enough, but I fail to see any significance.”

Rolen sputtered, and Raylith lifted an eyebrow.

“You really don’t get it?”

They asked in unison. It was Rolen who continued, while Raylith pursed her lips.

“Okay, so... since you are a traveling bard, maybe you haven’t been in the country for that long. But about ten years ago, we had a queen. Then, she dissapeared completely and without warning. King Bloomstead took her place... there was, as far as I have heard, no reason why HE should become king, but he was.”

Here the bard put two and two together.

“So... I understand that your surmise is that this King Bloomstead did away with the queen, taking the Crown and therefore the kingdom?”

Rolen nodded gravely. Leed stood, muttered something, looking half exited and half annoyed.

“Miss Raylith, I suggest you take this book and see what you can discover. No, Rolen, I belive this is for the best. You must see what you can find out from your mentor. I will work on my own line. Unless you think it unwise, we shall meet here in three days.”

There was no time to protest as Leed stood and walked out of the Vomiting Dragon. But before he had fully exited, both Raylith and Rolen both saw him visibly dissapear.

Good thing Leed exists... otherwise Rolen might have had his head beaten out with a book.

Yes! My character is smart! Raylith really doesn't like Rolen, does she? Oh, who am I kidding, I already know that!
