Spot The Difference

Aura So I've been pretty unhappy with my art style recently, or more than usual anyway. I figured I'd do something to try and fix that by testing out a bunch of different colouring styles and seeing which one I like the most. And I figured after a while, why not ask what you guys think? Do you have a style above that you like the look of most? And if so, why? Or on the flip side, is there one you hate? Feel free to tear it to bloody shreds, I've probably already said it to myself anyway.

    I have to say, my favourites are Airbrush, the two Cell shading ones, Blobby and Skittle injection (because the yellow in the hair honestly looks good). As for my least favourite, it has to be Cross-hatching because it just looks rough and flat compared to the others

    I personally prefer the Complex Cell Shading and Airbrush, but that's my opinion.

    Cheers, both of you :3

    @Shiny Lyni I have literally never tried doing cell shading with more than 3 colours before as I've never been that into it, but I was really surprised that I actually liked the complex one. I'll probably hold onto it for when its appropriate for the tone of the work. I can see what you mean now with the yellow highlights though, they'd probably need to approach white more to avoid looking odd. But yeah that's helpful thank you ^^

    @Psycho Monkey Hmmmm that's fair, I'd imagine it would look a bit better if I'd added more shading or used a thicker brush. But you're right, it is very fast, so it would work for a comic... I didn't think of that... hmm... I get where you're coming from - it really is up to what I want to do - but I still think its valuable to get feedback like this as it helps me notice things that I may not have thought about otherwise.

    They are all so beautiful though, how could I ever tear them apart? If I had to be objective though, I'd have to say Cross-scratching looks a little flat since it lacks the shading the others have which results in the colors looking a bit monotone to me. It would, however, work well if you ever wanted to make a manga since it's a quick easy method (I'm assuming) that won't take as much time as your other more detailed methods. I have to agree with @Shiny Lyni that Smudge Brush, Skittle Injection, Cell Shading, and Blobby look best.

    Overall though, it comes down to whichever style you want to use. Even if it's one you aren't comfortable with it never hurts to try new things and practice with them as that's the only way to get good at it. If you enjoy what you're using/doing then that will have a far greater impact on your work than if you forced yourself. The best art comes from a happy and motivated artist! :)

    Well shit, I love them all and I can't really say one's objectively better than the other :o

    I'm a little biased towards cell shading simply because it's what I'm used to myself, and between the two I like how the complex one looks. Of the others, I like how natural smudge brush looks and blobby is bubbly and shiny, but I love the colors of skittle injection (and it even has a great name XD) though the yellow highlights in the hair just really stand out in an odd way.

    I hope that helps a little? ^^;
