Every game has spooked me in one way or another.
Whether it be the atmosphere, the jumpscares, or honestly, the characters.
Here's my Top5.
NUMBER 5!
If I were to choose a spooky location from Sonic, people would think it would be Pumpkin Hill from Sonic Adventure 2.
But it's fun to be around rather than actually scary.
If any canon Sonic zone has creeped me out, it's definitely Angel Island Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
#5: Angel Island Zone, Sonic the Hedgehog 3
What? No, I'm not talking about the forest, get that outta here!
I mean when it's on FIRE.
Jesus Christ! What happened?!
Okay, mini-boss set the forest on fire, but HOLY CRAP!
Way to go, Knick Knock Knackers!
You set your own forest on fire!
Don't get me wrong, the music goes on and the badniks are still there...
But the background looks like HELL!
Do you ever wonder how Sonic and Tails feel right now?
And they have fur!
They must be BOILING in there!
Imagine!
Knuckles looking at his burning forest, the Chaos panicking from a sudden disaster!
How did they make it look like a forest again after these events?!
NUMBER 4!
The Five Nights at Freddy's games have always scared me.
I wouldn't play them on a low-darkness iPod outside on a sunny day.
Every FNaF game has had their spooky pizzerias.
Five Nights at Freddy's had you worrying what was behind those doors.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 had the fear of being surrounded. I mean, if you're bad at the game, at least.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3 had that feeling you were being watched.
Five Nights at Freddy's 4 gave you that fear of having to look everywhere, and if you don't pay attention to one part for too long, it's far too late.
But the game that came shortly after that, Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, takes Number 4 on this list.
#4: The Office, Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location
I don't think it's an office. Could be an attraction or pizzeria, but I'll just call it the office for now.
As the game progresses, things get harder for the player.
For the past 4 FNAF games, you have worried about what's going to appear to the left, right, and directly in front of you.
But never what's behind you.
And thanks to Ballora, every which way is a threat.
She could be behind you.
Funtime Freddy could be across the vent.
And personally, I think this is the freakiest.
Yes, the other FNAF games have animatronics going after you:
Oop. Toy Bonnie's crawling through the vent. Better close it. Oop. Freddy's coming for me. Better close the doors.
But in Sister Location:
AH! THESE GUYS ARE COMING! I HAVE TO HIDE!
It just feels more like a manhunt than any of the other games.
NUMBER 3!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl had a legit story mode.
And I don't know about you, but I bet I liked it more than others.
And in that game, there has never ever been any character that has creeped me out.
But Brawl had two.
One of them is Number 3 on this list.
#3: The Ruined Zoo, Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Lucas is *says in Buzz Lightyear voice* a sad, sad, little man.
And is the most scarred person in this whole story.
Luigi gets over his fear eventually.
He comes across not one, not two, but THREE villains at ONCE!
The Porky Statue is chasing him down!
Wario snatched his best friend!
PORKY IS A BITCH!
Lucas comes across Ness and Red, but Ness gets captured and Red can't fight on his own.
Not to mention HIS PARTY MEMBERS ARE MISSING!
Not even Boney showed up!
WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM?
Did they get captured and never saved?
Were they assassinated in front of Lucas' eyes?
But we're not here to talk about Lucas.
The Ruined Zoo.
Sometimes I look at it and think of what must've happened to it.
There doesn't seem to be damage anywhere, so Porky didn't take it over.
There's still water, so it wasn't abandoned from drought.
But think about this:
It's a zoo.
Which means somewhere out there, the animals that were held captive broke free and is roaming the world now.
...now that's spooky.
Maybe one of them is the Ultimate Chimera?
...probably not.
NUMBER 2!
The first 3 games in the Mario & Luigi games were not child-friendly.
'Nuff said.
But there was one game in particular that freaked me out the most.
And for those of you who actually care about the franchise, you know what I'm talking about.
#2: Toad Town, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
IT'S JUST A GAME, IT'S JUST A GAME...
There are a lot of candidates for this spot.
Vim Factory. Toadwood Forest. Mothership. Yoshi's Island. Hollijolli Village.
But I chose this one and it can be described with 1 word:
Dystopian.
Every last toad except for the granny toads are gone.
Which means they're either dead or roaming somewhere they probably shouldn't be.
Everything has been taken apart by the Shroobs.
The Toads' houses have been blocked off.
There are FREAKING SHROOBS EVERYWHERE!
But most of all...
THIS IS THE SAME ONE FROM PAPER MARIO 64!
It's like taking your distant childhood memories and putting them right into the paper shredder!
It's like playing Batman Telltale!
Bruce: The Toads must've blocked off their houses in a desperate attempt of staying safe...the Granny Toads must've hid somewhere such as a cellar...
Oh, and you're not with the babies this time!
The two are constantly seperated, and then it gives off those vibes that you're alone with the monsters...
*shiver*
Before I get to Number 1, here are some honorable mentions
Haunted Hills, Fortnite
Withered trees and damaged houses. Problem is, you can get out of there back to the grassy paradise in less than a minute.
The Weeping Angels, LEGO Dimensions
This level doesn't let you take time to think of a strategy for the puzzle that this level requires, and if you touch one of them, there's literally a seperate cutscene just for jumpscare purposes. There's even a scene where the trio is surrounded and the only way out was using Batman's grappling hook to push a button to open a door below you. Spooky level.
BSL Research Station, Metroid Fusion
This level is creepy.
But to be honest, Number 1 would've been kinda boring if you knew what it was.
Every Mann Vs. Machine Map, Team Fortress 2
The robots from Team Fortress 2 always creeped me out.
Especially Heavy Robot and Soldier Robot. And the sentry buster.
And these maps give off the vibe that you gotta do your job and there's no more fooling around.
NUMBER 1!
Two Mario games in a row? WHAT?!
#1: World of Nothing, Super Paper Mario
Come on. Don't tell me you didn't know.
After escaping the Void as it absorbs Sammer's People, everything is in ruin.
There are a few pieces here and there, but other than that, this place is empty.
I was literally scared out of my mind simply because this place exists.
THE MUSIC FEELS LIKE SOMETHING'S CREEPING UP ON ME!
THE ONLY OTHER PERSON TO ACCOMPANY ME IS TIPPI!
I WANNA GO HOME BUT THE PURE HEART'S HERE!
SOMEBODY HALP MEEEEE!
I want you to look at this place and tell me this is an E-rated game.
That's about as bullshit as Kirby games being rated E.
Whether it be the atmosphere, the jumpscares, or honestly, the characters.
Here's my Top5.
