Oliver was playing Kirby: Triple Deluxe on his 3DS when he heard a ding come from his iPhone. Pausing the game and picking up his cell phone, Queen looked at the alert that had just come in. He had gotten mail… mail from Queen Consolidated. Oliver smiled widely. He had sent in a letter yesterday to ask for a job. He hadn’t been expecting an answer already, but he jumped with joy as he saw the headline for the email.
“Chosen date for job interview - Queen Consolidated”
Reading the letter, Oliver saws that the chosen date for the job interview was later that day, at 5 o’ clock. That would give Oliver some time to have some fun with his hobby.
“...your wallet, numbskull. Hand it over.” a thug ordered, his knife pointed at the old couple.
“A-alright, just don’t attack.” the old man said, taking his wallet out and tossing it to the ground. The robber smiled, picking up the wallet and beginning to back away.
Then an arrow shot straight past the robber.
The robber turned around, shocked to see a man there with a large bow, green hoodie and emerald mask.
“Y-you’re… the Green Arrow!”
“Indeed I am. Drop the wallet.” Arrow said with a smile.
“You’re just a guy with a bow! You ain’t the Batman, just some nut with a string and some sticks!” the robber rationalized, dashing towards him with his knife.
Before he took three steps, the Emerald Archer had loaded two arrows into his bow and fired them, knocking the knife aside and knocking the man out. The woman walked over, picking up the wallet.
“T-thank you, Green Arrow.” the woman said with a smile.
“No problem. Now go enjoy yourselves!” Green Arrow replied, climbing up towards the roof. “Oh, and call the cops! I don’t have a cell phone!”
As the Emerald Archer made it to the rooftops, he started to run across them. This was a liberating and exciting feeling. Who knew that Oliver Queen could be a crime fighter? Arrow thought to himself. And that he’d enjoy it so much?
The bowman skidded to a halt, hearing sirens. Specifically, police sirens. Looking out in the direction the sirens were coming from, Green Arrow spotted someone with a bag of money in their hand run into a car and start driving off. Three police cars followed.
Now how about that? Arrow thought. Skidding down the side of the roof, he jumped off and landed on his feet. It hurt slightly, but after everything he had done on the island his body was used to falls like this.
The Emerald Archer heard a gasp from beside him. Turning around, he noticed a young woman behind him attempting to hold her breath.
“You’re Green Arrow…” she said, ecstatic.
“Indeed I am.” Arrow replied with a grin. He noticed the bike she was leaning against. “Mind if I borrow your bike for a bit? I’ll be back as soon as I stop that robber the police are chasing.”
“Of course!” the woman said, and the bowman hopped onto the bike. Driving off, he drove after the police cars. As they turned a corner, Green Arrow was able to turn faster, overtaking one of the cars. Passing in between the other two, he used one of his hands to take an arrow out of his quiver and put it in his mouth while using the other hand to steer. He then took his bow off of his back, taking the string in his mouth alongside the arrow and lining it up with the bow. He fired off the shot, and it punctured one of the car’s wheels. It began to skid, and the bowman put his bow aray to use both hands for driving. As the car spun out, Arrow hopped off of the bike, notching and firing an arrow at the robber. His single shot knocked the robber out.
As the car stopped moving, the Emerald Archer landing on top, the three police cars arrived.
“That was a risky move, Arrow!” one of the cops said, getting out of the car. “Someone could have died from the car going out of control.”
“But no one did, right?” the archer stated. “There’s no one on this street that the car could have possibly hit - everyone got away from the road as soon as they heard the sirens. Now I’ve got to get the bike back to the nice young lady I borrowed it from.” Before the cops could reply, Green Arrow was back on the bike and driving back towards where he left the girl.
As Oliver walked home, he still smiled at the business card the woman had given him - Marianne, Florist. If he ever needed flowers, he knew where he would go. He then checked his watch - it was 4:37 PM already. “Hoh shit!” Oliver said to himself, dashing into the house to grab the bag with the stuff he thought he would need for the interview already packed before running on down towards Q-Core.
Arriving at the foot of Q-Core, Oliver followed the instructions on the letter to make it to a special area of the Q-Core. He showed the letter in place of a security card, letting the guards know this was where he was supposed to be. As he entered the room, he saw a man with his back turned to him. The Queen Consolidated logo was on the back of the jacket he was wearing.
“Oliver Queen?” the man asked.
“That’s me.” Oliver replied.
“Good.” the man turned around to reveal a black goatee. “I’m Arthur King. I’m the head of Queen Consolidated at the moment.”
“And you’re the one who’s supposed to be interviewing me?” Oliver asked with a chuckle. The two shook hands. “Thanks for this.”
“Hey, if the returning Queen himself wants a job here, then I’d better make sure he deserves it.” Arthur pulled a seat out for Oliver before sitting down across from him. The two started their interview.
“...and what kind of position are you hoping for at the company?” Arthur asked.
“R&D would be something I feel like I could do.” Oliver said. “I actually have a few different ideas for things that I’ve been having over the past few days, if you’d like to take a look.” Arthur nodded, and Oliver took out a few blueprints.
“Explosive arrows, zip cords, store-and-release capsules… these do seem very interesting.” Arthur replied with a smile. “But the question is, how good are you at making things? R&D is more development than research, in truth.”
“I built myself a shelter on a deserted island that I used to survive for five years.” Oliver said. “I’m pretty good at construction and invention.”
“Then I think we’ve got a place for you.” Arthur smiled, shaking Oliver’s hand.
A few minutes later, Oliver walked into the large R&D floor of the Q-Core. Looking around, he saw it mostly barren.
“...aren’t there supposed to be people here?” Oliver asked.
“Uh, hello? There ARE people here.” a woman said, slowly turning around in a wheely chair in a hard-to-see corner. “Only two of us.”
“Um… who are you, exactly?” Oliver asked.
“Her name is Naomi Singh.” another voice stated, as the other new person typed away at a computer. “I’m Henry Fyff. We’re the only two people that Queen Consolidated wants in R&D for some reason or another.”
“If that was true, I wouldn’t be joining you.” Oliver said with a smile, walking over to them. “My name’s Oliver Queen. I’ll be joining R&D from now on.”
“WAIT WAIT WAIT. THE Oliver Queen?!” Naomi asked. “Holy shit! How- How’d you get into this backwater division?!”
“I wanted to be here.” Oliver replied. “I like doing R&D stuff.”
“As in the R or the D?” Henry asked.
“Both.” Oliver smiled.
“Well, thank god! Finally I can actually get someone willing to help me construct prototypes.” Naomi replied with a bit of snark.
“HEY!” Henry shouted back. He threw a soda can at Naomi as she chuckled at him.
I like these two already. Oliver thought, smiling.
The next day, Oliver had gotten to know Henry and Naomi better, working with them and sharing his plans with them. The trio had experimented, calculated and constructed a variety of different things. Only Oliver knew the true purpose of these inventions, however. It was near closing time - 5:54 PM. Oliver was looking around the stores when Naomi ran up to him.
“Hey Oliver? We’re packing up for the night. Mind helping?”
“Sure, in just a minute.” Oliver replied. He saw some sort of closet, and opened it up to find several green-and-black bodysuits inside. “What are these?”
“They’re suits we designed for military use. Called them Hunter suits.” Naomi answered. “Highly bullet resistant while still being flexible.”
“Don’t seem to cover the arms.”
“Probably why they weren’t officially brought into use.” Naomi replied. “But as it is, we’ve just got twelve suits back here - six for each gender, all in different sizes. These are the prototypes, but we never got to make full versions.”
“And those shoes and gauntlets at the bottom?” Oliver asked, spotting some more accessories lying down beneath the suits.
“Extra protection that was meant to go over the lower arms and legs. Again, never used.”
“Interesting.” Oliver thought with a smile.
Ten minutes later, the other two had left. Oliver smiled at himself as he had sown a hood onto one of the Hunter suits, specifically the one for males of his size. He then finished up the final touches on his mask. Taking one of the capsules and putting it onto one of the arrow shafts he had designed, Oliver gave a massive grin. Dropping the arrow into the quiver with the other 49 he had made, Oliver put on the Hunter suit and donned his mask. He put his quiver on his back and picked up his bow.
“Thank you, Queen Consolidated.” Green Arrow said. “You’ve just given the Green Arrow his perfect costume. Criminals of Star City beware!”
