What is a fan region without its own native creatures? So here is Alraunum - a Grass-type Pokémon commonly found in Quartz Forest - and its evolutions, the Grass/Dark Mandrebus and the Grass/Ghost Belladonyx, evolving at Level 30. Male Alraunum evolve into Mandrebus while females evolve into Belladonyx.
I thought they'd look awesome in this style, as if placed on the pages of an old, medieval-era Herbal.

Well sure, if you consider a thing with too wide a grin for its face, very powerful paralyzing toxins, extending nail-tendrils which it uses to draw the life out of its victims and a literal scissor limb which it uses to cut the tendrils when it finishes feeding "majestic". Belladonyx is honestly quite a monster herself - she just appears less monstrous to human standards - which is not surprising, considering she was sort of designed to be "alluring, but with an innate sense of being not quite right" that felt really in line with both the plant she's based on and her nature as a ghost-type.
Funny story, really - Belladonyx was the first of the line to be designed, inspired by a lot of folklore and mythology around the actual deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) that I looked into as part of a final assignment for a university course about plants in the service of man (which was one of the more fascinating courses in my biology degree). Mandrebus happened when I felt a male counterpart was needed for the species -which I based around Mandrakes, the berries of which were considered to have medicinal qualities related to male fertility. The more prominent part of the design had to, naturally, be the root (as mandrake roots are the most heavily folklore-referenced part of the plant) - and the horns and sort of more feral looks compared to the more humanoid-appearing Belladonyx was both inspired by celtic 'horned gods' and, to a degree, the whole beauty-and-the-beast thing.
Alraunum was the last of the line to be created, as sort of an intermediate form between the two - with the notion of the root part becoming more prominent in the males and the leaves, flowers and berries becoming more prominent in the females upon evolution. And thus you have a weird potato that evolves into either a tree hulk or a soul-sucking enchantress who uses her scissor-limb to cut its victim's thread of life... And proof positive that I can draw inspiration from the most random of sources.Jun 7, 2017PrincessPika and Merciless Medic like this. -
