I love fighting games.
I really do.
The amount of creative fighting characters that these studios put into!
Here are two fighting games mainly run by Nintendo that I'm going to review and see which one is better.
And these are going to be from the ones with the least content to the most.
So without further ado, let's get going.
First up is Kirby Fighters.
I love Kirby.
A lot.
I'm really hyped for Star Allies.
And making Kirbys fight to the death is a really good idea, seeing as though it has everything Smash Bros. in it.
You can play as 12 different abilities.
Archer, Beam, Beetle, Bell, Bomb, Cutter, Fighter, Hammer, Ninja, Parasol, Sword, and Whip.
I'm REALLY glad they put in Cutter because CUTTER IS MY FAVORITE ABILITY!!1!!1!!!
But the thing I found most interesting about this game were the amount of thought they put into the stages.
Fine Field from Kirby Triple Deluxe, Lollipop Land, also from Triple Deluxe, Castle Lololo from Kirby Super Star, Grass Land from Kirby's Dreamland 3, Dedede Arena from Kirby Super Star, Shiver Star from Kirby 64, Bubbly Clouds from Kirby Super Star, Dyna Blade's Nest from Kirby Super Star, Butter Building from Kirby's Adventure, Dangerous Dinner from Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Fountain of Dreams from Kirby's Adventure, and Old Odyssey from Kirby Triple Deluxe.
Of course, most of these have different names, but it's easier to recognize them from their world names rather than the levels in question.
Of course, each fighter and stage have their own gimmicks.
The fighters can have secret costumes that could be referenced to outsiders or just other Kirby characters.
For example, Ninja Kirby's is...Shinobi from Joe Musashi?
...so is Kirby X Sonic confirmed then?
Not to mention Dark Kirby appears in this game.
Yeah, yeah, I know, his name is Shadow Kirby, but I'm going with the natural Amazing Mirror lore, mkay?
Anyway, yeah, Dark Kirby.
He looks a little different, but you can fight him in this game, and only on Another Dimension from Kirby's Return to Dreamland.
Which I think is really cool, because Dark Kirby deserved more attention as a Dark Pit or Shadow Mario or Metal Sonic. Something like that.
I think Kirby Fighters is a great game and I think if you're willing to play, give it a shot.
There are some negatives, though.
Kirby Fighters Deluxe could've had every ability in the series because it's its own game and has a lot more space to take up.
Even Sleep or Metal, no matter how useless they may seem.
Heck, I wouldn't even mind if Cupid or Animal got in!
Not to mention Whispy Woods, who they have LITERALLY PROVED TO BE ABLE TO PROGRAM HIM ON THE DREAM LAND STAGE IS SMASH!
Kirby Fighters has a lot of potential, and at this point they can only work their way up.
I'll give it a solid 8/10.
Next is Pokken Tournament.
The game that Nintendo pretends that it's simple.
Well Pokken is based off of Tekken, and Tekken is not a simple game.
This game is Kirby Fighters but with more content, and when I mean more content, I mean an ANIME PERSONA, a PARTNER POKEMON, a LEAGUE.
It's filled with stuff.
And here I am, about to list every character in the Switch version.
Pikachu, Gengar, Charizard, Machamp, and Mewtwo from Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green. God, that's a lot of versions.
Suicune and Scizor from Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal.
Blaziken, Gardevoir, and Sceptile from Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.
*inhaaaale* Darkrai, Lucario, Croagunk, Empoleon, Weavile, and Garchomp from Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
Chandelure from Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2.
Braixen and Pikachu Libre from Pokemon X and Y.
And Aegislash and Blastoise (in that order) are on the way.
Out of all the generations, Generation 5 had the least. Which I find really infuriating, because Gen 2 had more, and Gen 2 was literally just a sequel.
But, again, they made a battle pack including Aegislash and Blastoise in seperate phases.
Of course, it's paid, which really sucks, because many people have been requesting Blastoise to be playable, and Nintendo is preteding Phase 2 doesn't even exist.
Now onto the stages, which aren't based off of Pokemon locations, sadly.
But I can infer from the stages.
First up is Ferrum Stadium.
Pokemon has had a lot of stages over the years, but the one it looks like the most could be the grassland setting from the Kalos League.
Neos City has a lot of candidates.
At first I was thinking Castelia City from Unova, but Castelia is always at night, so this one could be Hau'Oli City from Alola, because it's apparently next to a beach. Now, obviously, this stage was before the Gen 7 games, but hey, people can dream.
Old Ferrum Town could be Striaton City from Unova with its traditional look, or Jubilife City from Sinnoh, which is the higher possibility, since this game had mostly Gen 4 influence.
Tellur Town is most likely Newleaf Town from Sinnoh.
Phos Volcano. There aren't a lot of volcanoes from Pokemon, but this one has to be the volcano from Sinnoh, seeing as though Heatran can be seen from both volcanoes.
Diggersby Land is based off of a Gen 6 Pokemon, and the floor lights up, so this wouldn't be too out of the ordinary to say this was Anistar City from Kalos.
Tellur Town Autumn is hard. Black and White as well as their sequels are the only games to have noticeable season changes, but it could be based off of the Honey Tree mechanic from Sinnoh since all of the trees are orange like the ones in DPPT.
Ferrum Dojo. There aren't many dojos in Pokemon, the only one I can think of is the gym where you fight the Gym Leaders again in Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Training Gym could be the same above as it is more colorful like the gym in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Old Ferrum Town Winter has snow statues based off of Mudkip and his evolutions, Marshtomp, Swampert, and even Mega Swampert. This could be based off of Snowpoint City from Sinnoh.
Haunted House could be the Spooky House from Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, but there was one spooky hotel from Sinnoh that I can't remember the name of that this is probably based off of.
Mystery Carnival is Haunted House, but with a more carnival look to it.
Neos City Night is, without a doubt, Castelia City from Unova.
Regi Ruins is definitely the unnamed section of Hoenn where you can encounter the regis.
Blue Dome is the Aquarium Hallway from Pokemon Black 2 and White 2.
Magikarp Festival doesn't take much inspiration from anything, but it could be based off of the S.S. Anne from the early Pokemon generations.
The Dragon's Nest could be the Sky Pillar from Pokemon Emerald/Pokemon ORAS, since Rayquaza can be seen as a statue.
And of course, Dark Colosseum and Dark Colosseum Final are Pokken originals.
There is a mode involving the Ferrum League, an edgy girl, and Shadow Mewtwo, Pokken's original character.
What's really interesting about Shadow Mewtwo is they actually made sure they got everything right about him from Game Freak themselves.
*COUGH COUGH* ULTRON-SIGMA *COUGH COUGH*
Oh, and there's a Tippi/Navi in this game too, and she's a human.
And MY GOD, is she annoying!
The only thing I can find useful about Cia is when she says the synergy gauge is full.
Other than that, she's an awful and non-likeable voice-cracking NAVI.
I could get into the league itself, but really, there's nothing special about it.
It's just a league, do the league, encounter Shadow Mewtwo, save the world, boom, S rank.
That's the only flaw with the story. It wasn't memorable.
It's just Cia and the edgy girl and not much else.
Yeah, there are the league champions and special guys, but they don't play much of a big role.
Other than that, I respect the Shadow Mewtwo story ark.
And what's really cool about Shadow Mewtwo is that nothing is super effective against it.
Which is a nice callback to Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, which had Shadow Pokemon and nothing is super effective again.
They also have much more in common.
A dark aura, surrounds them.
The only things I find different about them is Shadow Mewtwo is powered by a dark crystal while Shadow Pokemon are tortured until they turn evil, like the Dark Ball from Pokemon 4ever.
It's really nice to see Game Freak acknowledge Pokemon XD.
The only flaw I have with this game is the amount of under appreciation from Gen 5.
So a nice 9/10 outta give it a slap of approval.
So as you can see, Pokken did the whole game-exclusive fighting game a little better than Kirby Fighters.
But to be honest, Kirby Fighters has a lot of potential, probably even more than Pokken, and that's probably because Kirby Fighters is Kirby-only Smash Bros.
Buddies as playable characters instead of copy abilities maybe?
Both games deserve more attention, and I recommend both of them.
This is being the Dopest of Leafeon, and I hope you all have a fabulous day!
I really do.
