Terisa stirred groggily in her bed, unwilling to give up her comfortable position beneath the warm covers. However, she was eventually forced to open her eyes in order to smack at whatever was gently shaking her. It was Sierra, already fully dressed and ready to begin the day. The older girl deftly dodged her sleepy sister’s flailing arm, grabbed it, and pulled. Terisa was sent tumbling out of bed and landed with a bump on the floor. She was about to begin scolding Sierra when her Eevee leapt down from the bed and began nuzzling her. Terisa couldn’t help petting the Eevee, and by the time she was done she had cooled down and was in a better mood. She stood up just in time to see Sierra standing in the doorway.
“Hurry up or you’ll be late for breakfast. Get dressed and hurry down, I have a meeting starting at noon and you’ll have to make the most of the morning.”
Sierra closed the door, and Terisa was left to prepare for the day. She went through her morning routine as quickly she could, with the added step of giving her Eevee a brief grooming with her hairbrush, which she would have skipped if the Evolution Pokémon didn’t enjoy it so much. Once they were done they walked downstairs, where Sierra was finishing her last bite of scrambled eggs. Terisa took a seat across from her sister at the small coffee table and began on her food, while her Eevee began lapping at a bowl of warm milk which had been prepared for her. It was a pleasant meal, and while Terisa ate she discussed the morning’s plans with her sister.
“So, what are we doing this morning? I want to have my first battle!”
“I suppose we could arrange that. We should have enough time to go back into Viridian Forest, find some wild Pokémon and get back before my meeting starts. Once it starts, I don’t want you doing any battling. You can walk around town, or you can hang out here until I get back, but no battling without me there, understood?”
“Okay... just as long as I can have a battle before lunch.”
“Like I said, I’m sure we can arrange that. We’ll need to get a move on, though.”
“Okay, Okay, I’m almost done, give me a minute.”
***************
A few minutes later, they were on their way. The stroll through Pewter was pleasant enough, but Terisa was anxious to get into the forest. She wanted to have her first battle, and hopefully even capture her first Pokémon. She had an empty Pokéball in the pocket of her jeans, just in case. Even shrunken down it was a bit uncomfortable to keep there, but she wanted to be ready. As she walked she was once again carrying her Eevee in her arms so that she would have plenty of energy for a battle, and Sierra had Mycel walking by her side. The older sister knew that as long as she was there her younger sister wouldn’t run into any real harm from wild Pokémon, but she didn’t want Terisa to risk a battle without herself present.
Once they were within the borders of the forest, Sierra told Terisa to lead the way. The younger sister began running back and forth, from tree to tree and shrub to shrub, looking for a wild Pokémon to battle. The first Pokémon she discovered was a yellowish, sheeny creature shaped like an upside down teardrop, which had suspended itself by a silken thread from one of the branches overhead. She was about to send Eevee out to battle it when she felt Sierra’s hand on her shoulder, holding her back.
“Wait, Terisa. That’s a Kakuna, if you make it mad it could evolve into a Beedril and seriously hurt you. You have to pick your fights carefully.”
Terisa was disappointed, but she knew her sister was right. She was being too eager, and if she wasn’t careful she could get in over her head. From then on she was more careful in her search. She was still impatient, however, and after several minutes of unsuccessful searching she was beginning to get frustrated. Seeing this, Sierra decided to drop another piece of advice.
“If you aren’t finding any Pokémon here, we can move a bit farther into the forest. Try being a bit quieter this time. Many wild Pokémon will shy away from humans if they hear them coming, so you may have better luck if you make less noise.”
“Okay, let’s try it...”
They advanced farther up the path, with an attempt on Terisa’s part to be stealthy. Sierra was already quiet enough without trying. As they rounded a bend in the path, Terisa stopped suddenly as she caught sight of two Pokémon in the middle of the path: a small green Pokémon she knew to be a Caterpie, and a Pidgey. The flying type was tugging at the struggling bug, attempting to wear it out. The Caterpie was trying to clutch the ground, and it had a frantic look in its eyes. Terisa sprang into action, quickly lowering Eevee onto the path and taking a rather dramatic stance. She pointed at the Pidgey and gave a firm command.
“Alright little missy, it’s our first battle and we won’t lose! Tackle that Pidgey!”
“Vee!”
The young Eevee scrabbled forward and rammed into the Pidgey with its head. The Pidgey had been too preoccupied by the Caterpie to notice the incoming attack, and it was flung back and pinned by the Eevee. It had lost its grip on the Caterpie when it was knocked back, and the little bug type took the chance to escape into the bushes. Terisa was too focused on the battle to notice. The Pidgey, finding itself held down, batted its wings quickly up and down, which confused the young Eevee and caused it to stumble back, shaking its head. The Pidgey rolled over onto its feet and shook the dust from its feathers, at the same time puffing itself up so that it looked bigger and more threatening. The Eevee began backing away, intimidated by the Leering bird, then turned tail and ran for the safety of her trainer. Terisa was disappointed. If her Eevee was too scared to fight, how could she catch the Pidgey? She decided to watch quietly and see what it would do. She expected it to fly away at any moment, but since it saw that it had sent its opponent running, it lowered its fluffed up feathers and began grooming its wing. Marigold saw that it wasn’t running and decided to try throwing the Pokéball. She fished it out of her pocket, made it grow, and lobbed it at the Pidgey. The bird heard her grunt as she threw the Pokéball and looked up, but it was too late. As it spread its wings to take off, the capture device hit it in the chest and it was transformed into a stream of data. The ball landed on the ground where the Pidgey had stood and began wobbling from side to side, a red light pulsing in the center button. Terisa watched with baited breath. It shook once... twice... Three times! She had captured her first wild Pokémon! She squealed in delight and scooped up Eevee, kissing her on the top of her head, between the ears. There was a clapping sound from behind them, where Sierra had stood watching the whole encounter. She allowed Terisa a moment or two to hug and praise Eevee before clearing her throat.
“Ehem. You still have to pick up the Pokéball.”
Terisa was slightly embarrassed that she had forgotten that important step, but she obediently jogged over and picked up the Pokéball containing the newest member of her team. She shrunk it down and stuffed it back in her pocket, resolving to let the Pidgey out once they were back at the Pokémon Center.
***************
Once the sisters were back in town, Sierra left for her meeting, leaving Terisa to her own devices. She decided to go back to the Pokémon Center so she could make friends with her newly caught Pidgey, and to get the nurse to do a check up on them after their battle.
She was greeted by the nurse at the front desk as she walked through the sliding glass doors. She gave a polite greeting in response and sat down in one of the comfortable chairs in the lobby. She retrieved the Pokéball from her pocket and released the Pidgey, who fluttered in the air for a few seconds before landing on the coffee table in front of her and cocking its head, staring at her with its beady eyes.
“Hi there! I’m Terisa, your new trainer. I’m sorry if we hurt you all, but my Eevee and I were super excited for our first battle.”
The Pidgey continued to stare at her. It understood what she was saying, but it didn’t seem to care. It only preened itself for a few seconds before turning its gaze back upon her. Terisa was a bit disappointed, but she wasn’t about to give up.
“How about this, let’s give you a name. How about... Plume?”
The Pidgey glared at her.
“No? Okay, how about... Regis?”
The Pidgey fluffed up and shook its head.
“Okay, not that either... Dart?”
Another negative shake of the head.
“How about Falkner?”
The bird seemed to consider for a moment before nodding its head in the affirmative and giving a trilling chirp. Terisa smiled, glad she had been able to come up with something they both liked. Her Eevee, who was on her lap, seemed pleased as well.
“Well, Falkner, it’s great to have you on the team! Like I said, I’m Terisa and this little missy... well, we actually haven’t come up with a name for her yet, but we’ll come up with something, won’t we?”
The young Eevee gave a few happy “Vee!”s in confirmation. Terisa talked to them for another few minutes before holding out her arm for Falkner to perch on. His sharp claws pricked at her arm, even through her sleeve, but it didn’t hurt too much. She picked up Eevee in her other arm and walked up to he front desk. After a moment the nurse looked up from some papers she was reading and noticed the girl waiting for her.
“How may I help you?”
“Hi, I just wanted to know if I could get these two a quick checkup.”
“Of course! Just return them to their Pokéballs and I’ll bring them back to you in about half an hour.”
Terisa complied, and once the nurse had taken them back she settled herself once more in a chair. During the wait she amused herself by reading some of the magazines and pamphlets available by the front desk, and once the wait was over she looked up from an amusing article about the world’s smallest recorded Magikarp to see the nurse waving at her. She walked over to see that both her Pokéballs were in a tray on the counter.
“How are they?”
“Both of your Pokémon are in great health! Your Pidgey was a little bit bruised up, but nothing serious.”
“Thanks, that’s great to hear!”
Terisa picked her Pokéballs up off the tray, stepped back, and released both Pokémon. Once they had both settled, she squatted in front of them.
“Hey guys, whaddaya day we go explore the city? Sierra won’t be done with her meeting until dinnertime, so we have until then to do whatever we want around town!”
Both her Pokémon seemed to like the idea, so she set out through the sliding glass doors with Eevee running at her heels and Falkner flying behind.
“Hurry up or you’ll be late for breakfast. Get dressed and hurry down, I have a meeting starting at noon and you’ll have to make the most of the morning.”
