The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in a very white room. I tried to sit up to have a good look around, but I couldn't find the strength. I managed to move my head however, so I looked around that way and concluded that I was in hospital.
I must've landed pretty hard, I thought, also, Ledger is still missing on Route 46. Stuff escaping Johto, I've gotta find him.
Struggling to get up again, I realised I was too heavy to move myself in my condition. I knew I was royally f...
I jumped as a nurse opened the door suddenly and walked into the room, carrying a large bowl of something.
"Hey nurse," I said weakly, "where am I?"
It was her turn to jump, and she looked over at me.
"You are in the Violet City Hospital," she said coldly, and I felt saddened when I realised that everyone saw me as the bad guy.
"Look Miss," I said, forcing myself to sit up although it killed my entire body, "I'm innocent. I would never steal a Pokémon intentionally."
"I don't know if I should believe you," she sighed, placing the bowl down on a table, "my cousin's shiny Hoothoot is missing because of you."
"I remember that one," I groaned, "but hear me out. I did make a list, so when I betrayed Team Rocket, everyone's Pokémon..."
"Did you make the anonymous call to the police?" she said in a startled tone. She was about to say something else, but the door burst open. I recognised the famous figure at once.
"Nurse, leave us," ordered Lance the dragon Trainer, stepping into the room, "I must have a word with Maxfield."
"Of course sir," stammered the nurse, the scurried out the room. Once the doors closed, Lance came over to my bed.
"Not the best way to be caught huh?" he said, taking a seat on a chair next to my bed.
"Definitely not," I agreed, "and I wanna know something, wh..."
"You're not in a position to ask questions," he said, "I will be asking you the questions before we cart you off to prison.
"But I'm innocent Lance," I sighed, "like I said to that nurse, I would never steal a Pokémon intentionally."
"Okay, I'm listening," he said begrudgingly.
So I proceeded to tell him how Team Rocket blackmailed me by kidnapping my Teddiursa, how I was forced to use my skills to steal Pokémon (okay, so I wasn't forced to steal them, but hey, anything to get me out of here), and how I tipped off the Police and was forced to escape the wrath of Giovanni before I managed to leave my notebook with all the Pokémon's trainers in it.
"Alright, a few questions before I give you my verdict," said Lance, "first off, when you found out what you had to do for Team Rocket, would it not've been better to risk the life of one Pokémon than to cause positively thousands a life of pain in that Team Rocket laboratory?"
"You mean Banjo?"
"Your Teddiursa, yes."
"That honestly never occurred to me," I said, feeling angry at his suggestion, "and if it did, I wouldn't go through with it. I know it would've been for 'the greater good' or whatever, but I couldn't leave Banjo with them. I wouldn't have been able to live with myself."
"I guess that's fair enough," said Lance, "and it's great that you love your Pokémon, but I'm afraid I'll have to take points off your story for having a choice as to whether or not you would work for Team Rocket. Now next question."
"Why did it take you so long to betray Team Rocket? If you had a notebook with all the Pokémon and their Trainers in it, surely it would've been easier on the Police to entrust the Pokémon back to their owners?"
"I know, but I originally wasn't sure about how to betray them," I said. It was almost true, I mean, I didn't know who I was going to betray Team Rocket, and then again, I wasn't originally planning on it, "I eventually concluded that I'd have to risk a phone call, despite not knowing whether Team Rocket was monitoring all phone calls in the building or not."
"Hmmm," said Lance thoughtfully, "I guess I'll give you points for that. And I'll also give you points for finally revealing the Team Rocket hideout to the world, despite that fact that it could've very well been the last thing that you did. Now on to the next question. Why did you hide from the authority?"
"Simple, it would've been easier for Team Rocket to find me if I'd made my location known throughout Johto," I said calmly, "I was scared of the wrath of Giovanni."
"That first statement makes sense," said Lance, "but you know, if Giovanni was still out there and after you if you had turned yourself in, then we could've offered you protection."
"I was also afraid I'd be put in prison," I said, feeling that being honest was the best strategy, "though I could've tell them the story I told you, they may not've believe me. And I also have thousands of angry Trainers to help get me in jail."
"True, but if I say so myself, your story might've just been believable," said Lance, "and now when you go to court, you'll most likely be charged for running from the authority, although you were, as you say, running from Giovanni's wrath."
I sighed, sinking down into my pillow.
"So all in all," said Lance, standing up, "I think your tale is believable. However, you made many poor decisions, which could've been the difference between jail and freedom."
He made his way over to the door.
"I'm very much afraid that you'll a prisoner soon," he said, shaking his head, "though I think you're telling the truth, there are many others who will take one look at you and sentence you to a life in jail."
"The Police will come to take you to court tomorrow morning, and I sincerely wish you the world of luck."
"Hey before you go," I said, and Lance turned back around to look at me, "who tipped me off to the Police?"
"No one tipped you off, they found a large paper file with every known member of Team Rocket. The Police looked through it to see who was missing from all the members they'd caught. You were one of three members."
With that, he was gone, leaving me feeling more alone then I ever did.
"Nurse," I called out. If what Lance said was true, then I had to get out of here.
The nurse from before came running into the room.
"Sorry for bothering you, but I need to use the bathroom," I said.
"That's okay," she said, coming over to the bed and helping me up. I saw that I was in hospital clothes, and looking back, I saw my backpack next to the bed.
"Are my Pokémon safe nurse?" I asked as she helped my walk down the hall.
"Yes yes," she said, "all four of them." She didn't tell me where they were, which is what I was hoping for.
"So where are they?" I said casually.
"They were put into the Police PC for the time being," she said, "that's where all criminal's Pokémon are stored if they're found guilty."
This was going to be very complicated.
"I'm just glad they're safe," I said, and we finally reached the loo.
I could finally walk on my own, so I thanked the nurse and went inside.
I didn't really need to go, I just wanted to see what it was like, and if I could escape from there. I couldn't, as there were no windows, no vents, nothing.
Sighing, I decided to wait in there for a bit, just to give the nurse waiting outside the impression that I was indeed using the loo.
After about a minute, I stepped back outside.
"Alright, let's get you back," she said, and soon we were back in my room.
That's settled it, I thought as I got back into my bed, I have to escape tonight.
