As Akio walked back into town hoping he would see the Charmander again they walked past a Clefairy shaped building!
"Wow, that's an amazing shape, what's it for?" Akio asked Quimbly as he stared up in amusement.
"It's the gym dummy." Quimbly laughed as Akio rushed in. He saw lots of girls giggling and gossiping, he supposedly walked past the group up to the podium, where the great Whitney stood.
"Why hello there fellow trainer, I am the Goldenrod gym leader and I rule this gym with..." Whitney roared out as she pulled out Clefairy. "Normal types."
"But that's a fairy type!" called Akio.
"No it's native to Johto making it a normal type." Whitney angrily replied.
"Fine but make it worth my while." Akio begged for a challenge little did he know what was coming.
Whitney chose Clefairy and Akio chose Poliwrath. The battle was...simple. Just after one Seismic toss Clefairy was down on the ground panic-stricken. Poliwrath wasn't prepared for the next one. Whitney sent in Miltank. It seemed harmless to Poliwrath until it charged up a powerful energy ball of destruction. Poliwrath was down. Akio tried Ivysaur, Heracross and even Cubone but the Miltank stood above all! It was then that Machop had taken a go and wasn't mistook for a loser. Miltank saw his fiery determination as they set to duel. Miltank stared spraying energy balls each one destroyed by Machop. Machop dived for an attack but in a heart-stopping moment...he was caught!
Machop struggled as Miltank used attract on the Machop. Machop blushed but didn't crush. Miltank began to see that they had an equal chance of victory and threw Machop on the ground stamping on him multiple times. Machop was down and injured when he radiated a luminous glow. Machop got bigger and he was evolving into Machoke! Machoke grabbed Miltank and punched him into Whitney's dazed eyes.
"YES, we won Machoke, we did it." Akio celebrated with his new Machoke, all of a sudden they heard a sniffle as Whitney burst into tears.
"W-w-w-whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? I was so close..." Whitney whined. Akio went over to her and comforted her. She eventually handed Akio the badge and wished them a farewell on their way to Ecruteak city!
