December 7, 3007
Our story begins! Brian and Axel meet Madison for the first time. Brian reluctantly begins training her in the ways of Pokémon. He also gets his first glimpse of the mysterious Team Neos.
December 13
Brian and Axel witness two members of Team Neos murder an accused member of Team Galactic. He and Madison are forced to battle the Neos members in self-defense. Afterward, Madison invites herself to become Brian’s travelling companion.
Over the next six months Brian begins to grow fond of his little tag-a-long and starts thinking of her as his adopted sister.
June 20, 3008
The conclusion of the Sinnoh League Tournament. Brian and Axel lose to Paul Shinji and his Torterra in the final round earning second place. That night they are invited to participate in the first ever White City Tournament.
June 22
Brian and Axel leave Madison behind since they can’t bring her to White City.
June 30
Brian and Axel arrive in White City. There they meet Strife Maxwell (though they don’t get his name right way)
July 1
Brian and Axel attend the tournament’s opening ceremonies but don’t have a match this day. Instead they visit Prof. Himee and Asuna at the White City Pokémon Lab.
July 2
Brian has his first match with Cal. Axel effortless crushes his team.
July 3
Brian has his second match with Katelyn and wins.
July 4
Brian has his third match with Goliath. It is a hard earned victory. Later that night Brian has his fourth match against Eve Illuminati. After an intensely fought match, Brian loses. After the battle, Brian and Axel are picked up by a man named Arthias who has been instructed to take them to meet Strife Maxwell. Strife formally introduces himself while laying startling information on Brian: the identity of Brian’s real father, Nathan Xelbu, and the fact that Strife is the leader of Team Neos. He invites Brian to join, then gives him a Beldum when Brian declines. After all that happened, Brian BSODs.
July 5
After spending most of the day moping like an emo sack of crap, Brian gets his ass kicked by Axel during a hurricane. The hurricane exists purely for Rule of Cool and no other reason. And don’t worry, the finals ended before the storm hit.
July 6
Brian and Axel pack up and leave White City after saying goodbye to Prof. Himee.
July 8
Brian and Axel return home to Pallet Town for a bit of a break.
July 11
And then they leave again for Johto.
July 12
After a comical reunion with Madison, the trio head for the Whirl Islands for vacation.
July 13
After claiming to have seen a large silver bird in the pre-dawn hours of the morning, Madison convinces Brian and Axel to explore the Whirl Island caves with her. Inside they hear the roar of Lugia but do not see the Legendary Bird.
July 14
Tragedy strikes when Madison is brutally murdered by two members of Team Rocket. Brian and Axel go on a roaring rampage of revenge slaughtering not just the Rockets responsible, but every Rocket in the area. Unbeknownst at the time, this is the first manifestation of Brian’s Dragon-forme.
July 25
After taking some time to regroup and properly plan a course of action, Brian returns to White City to accept Strife Maxwell’s earlier proposal that he join Team Neos.
July 28
Brian and Axel arrive in Goldenrod City to officially sign up for Team Neos. A four day training seminar begins. Eve was also recruited by Raiden Arka, a mentor of Brian’s.
July 31
The final day of training. Brian’s Dragon-forme activates again when he blocks an attack from an opponent’s Scyther. He is brought into Raiden’s personal squad along with Eve, Chane, and Zack.
August 1
The new squad members get acquainted with one another and get their new uniforms. They are sent on their first mission: to stop Team Rocket’s assault on the Route 34 Day Care.
August 2
Arka Squad travels to the Dragon’s Den for recon. Brian realizes something is wrong with him when he notices the wound he got from Scyther is fully healed without even a scar and after having an adverse reaction to a Dragon Fang found in Dragon’s Den.
August 3
With Raiden’s permission, Brian and Axel return once again to White City, this time to visit Prof. Himee. Prof. Himee and Asuna run a series of tests on Brian and learn that he is a Dragon-typed human who can change Forme, however he cannot control it yet. Now knowing what he is, Brian vows to learn to control his power.
August 4
Brian and Axel spend most of the day with Himee before flying to Ecruteak to reunite with the rest of the squad.
August 5-6
Arka Squad is assigned a mission to protect Johan Kaiser, the Johto Prime Minister’s son, from a kidnapping attempt by Team Rocket. They are assisted by Lieutenant Charles Deter and have their first encounter with a Rocket Executive, Petrel Lambda. Not only do the Phoenix Hotel ballroom and Tin Tower suffer significant damage, the laws of Physics are completely disrespected.
August 6
The aftermath of the battle forces Arka Squad to relocate to Kanto.
October 14
Arka Squad thwarts Team Rocket’s drug cartel in Vermillion Harbor
October 15
Zack makes the embarrassing mistake of flirting with a bishonen man.
October 22
Brian is singled out and targeted by the Assassin Creed. After a grueling battle, Brian murders the ruthless assassin.
October 23
Chane proves just how much of a badass she is by defeating Rocket Executive Lance Proton and the female grunt that was in love with him.
October 31
The night of Masquerade. After dealing with a live action internet troll all night, Eve defeats him and ties him to a tree as punishment.
November 1
Raiden tracks down the treacherous Hunter siblings and eliminates them as punishment for deserting Team Neos.
November 2
Axel and the other Pokémon run amok in a Team Rocket owned day spa while their Trainers relax. Raiden rejoins the squad that night.

Team Neos defeats Team Magma
March 19
Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic, forms a pact with Archie and Giovanni, the leaders of Team Aqua and Team Rocket respectively, uniting their organizations into Team Triad.
March 24
Arka Squad gets a mission to intervene in Team Rocket activity in the Safari Zone. Here they are ambushed by the newly formed Team Triad and barely escape with their lives. Brian runs away from his squad consumed by rage at having not only suffered a loss at the hands of his enemies, but also from nearly getting killed by Eve’s careless use of Ice Beam against him.
March 29
Having spent his time training in the Johto Battle Frontier, Brian is found by Eve and made to return to the squad. Raiden puts him on probation for his recklessness and reminds him that Team Neos won’t accept resignations. Raiden then takes the squad to Team Neos’s underground base beneath Saffron City.
April 7
After weeks of preparation, the three Captains of Team Neos announce their counter strategy to stopping Team Triad once and for all. They decree that Team Neos hunt them down and leave no survivors. Squads were also to be reorganized to give them equal numbers with Team Triad groups.
April 8
Arka Squad, Eirwyn Squad, and Feng Squad are merged and ordered to each gather another squad of officers for tracking down Triad activity in the Sevii Islands.
April 10
The Sevii Unit is assembled and heads to One Island.
April 11
Sevii Unit thwarts Team Triad’s attempt at getting into the Pokémon Storage System marking their first victory against the combined might of Triad.
April 15
Sevii Unit eliminates members of Team Triad attacking the Four Island Day Care. Brian and Axel go to Icefall Cave for cold environment training accompanied by Zack and Lloyd. There they get in a battle with an Aqua couple named Sean and Abby. After that conflict, Brian gets challenged by an INTERPOL officer named Zachary to a battle. After winning they have dinner together.
April 18
Brian and Raiden receive a tip on the location of Team Rocket’s hideout on Chrono Island. Upon raiding the Rocket Warehouse, the team is separated thanks to the Spinner traps. Eve ends up in a battle with Rocket Executive Ariana Sham and wins. Team Neos succeeds in capturing the base but Ariana escapes.
April 19
Team Triad desperately tries to catch Moltres to once again gain the upper hand against Team Neos. Thanks to the timely intervention of the Sevii Unit and Zack’s training as a Pokémon Ranger, Team Triad is thwarted. However, Moltres is still captured by Ken Feng much to Zack’s shock and Raiden’s anger. While most of the Sevii Unit goes to the Ember Spa to celebrate a job well done, Arka Squad rents a hotel to deal with their own issues.
April 20
Early in the morning Sevii Unit goes to Resort Gorgeous to wipe out Teams Aqua and Galactic before they can relocate thus finally purging Team Triad from the Sevii Islands for good. The conflict lasted only ten days.
April 21
Zack and Skylar go out on a date.
May 27
Team Neos captures Team Rocket’s base in Mahogany Town, Johto.
June 19
Team Neos captures Team Galactic’s base in Eterna City, Sinnoh.
June 25
Team Neos captures Team Aqua’s main base off the coast of Lilycove City, Hoenn.
June 28
Team Neos raids the Veilstone City Team Galactic building. Cyrus reveals that he had only been using Team Rocket and Team Aqua and now plans to betray them to save himself. Giovanni however is one step ahead of him and betrays Cyrus and Archie first. After Giovanni’s escape, Archie and Cyrus are defeated by Captains Sinclair and Ross. With their bases captured and their leaders killed, Team Aqua and Team Galactic are defeated. Leader (Arthias) swears to bring down Giovanni himself.
June 29
Viridian City Gym is burned to the ground by rioters in protest of Giovanni being a Gym Leader.
July 1
Leader gathers the squads with the best records for a final assault on Team Rocket’s main base in Celadon City, Kanto; the Rocket Game Corner. The attack begins at midnight. Arka Squad is included in this blitzkrieg.
July 2
Midnight: Team Neos marches on the Game Corner for the final battle! Once inside however, they are scattered thanks to the Spinner traps. Brian has his final confrontation with Petrel Lambda and kills him with his bare hands. During the battle Beldum evolves into Metang. Chane has her final confrontation with Lance Proton. Proton is killed by his own Machoke after the torture he inflicted on the Pokémon. Eve has her final confrontation with Ariana Sham and has Diva kill the Executive. Zack does battle with Rocket Executive Archer Kurtz, Giovanni’s second in command. Putting all of his skills and guile to the test, Zack defeats the Executive. Archer kills Lt. Deter but his finished off by Lloyd after attempting to take Zack’s life as well. Raiden has a battle with Pierre Duvall, an assassin hired by Team Rocket to eliminate Team Neos. It is the first battle in a long time where Raiden actually had to go all out which excites him, but leaves him disappointed because he is also forced to kill his opponent to survive. Finally, Arthias curb-stomps Giovanni Terremoto and forces him to disband Team Rocket once and for all, thus bringing an end to the war.
Day: Brian asks Chane to help him and Axel evolve Riolu since the Emanation Pokémon wants to evolve but can only do so by Happiness during the day. After spending all day together nurturing their Pokémon, Brian, Axel and Chane watch proudly as Riolu evolves into Lucario and Lucy evolves into Blissey.
Night: When Brian, Axel, and Chane return to Raiden’s penthouse, they find Zack has opted to throw a party in celebration of Team Neos’s recent victory. Later on Brian gets a phone call from Raiden. Raiden has come home and is not happy about the party. He uses his new authority as a recently promoted Lieutenant to kick everyone out.
July 3
Brian wakes up in the morning to Chane screaming. Turns out Zack and Skylar had sex. Skylar asks Raiden if she can have Zack but he refuses. He needs all the members of his squad for the missions to come.
July 8
Leader hijacks every television network for a live broadcast. He publicly executes Giovanni who had been captured and then declares open war against the world government. He challenges the people to rise up and join the fight as well.

About the Story:
When I first came up with The Rise of Team Neos, only a few events were planned from the start. Brian meets Madison. The two bond over him training her. The two having their first battle against Team Neos. Brian getting invited to participate in the White City Tournament and leaving Madison behind. Brian’s first meeting with Strife Maxwell. Brian meeting and befriending Prof. Himee. Brian winning his first three battles in the tournament but losing the fourth. Brian learning about his father and Strife’s involvement in Team Neos from the man himself along with the ensuing BSOD. Brian reuniting with Madison. Madison’s death and the awakening of Dragon-forme. Brian joining Team Neos. Brian learning about his Dragon-forme.
That may seem like a lot but everything else that happened between those moments and even leading into those moments were either filler or repercussions of the events that transpired. I was basically winging it. After Brian joined Team Neos I had nothing planned until the eventual fall of Team Rocket. Around that time Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days came out so I used ideas from that and Crisis Core to come up with the different missions for the squad outside of their interventions against Team Rocket. Or rather I intended to but… meh. At the very least I wanted to build up the relationship between the new characters introduced at this time and flesh out their personalities a bit.
I had a few different ideas in my head for that, namely Zack flirting with a bishonen, something fun for Halloween, and shenanigans at a day spa. When Soul Silver came out, I evolved a Togetic. Its Pokédex data said it gets dispirited around negative emotions so I wanted to use that too. Those ideas eventually coalesced into the different character centric chapters with the plotlines behind them being direct results of previous actions taken by the characters. The fact that the infamous server crash happened at this exact moment paved the way for the fic’s future. See, Volume 1 was never supposed to get this long or in depth. But the more I wrote, the more ideas just kept pouring into me. Post-Fallout was the perfect opportunity to rework my previous plans for the story. Like I said, I was winging it.
The formation of Team Triad, the union between Rocket, Aqua, and Galactic, was completely spur of the moment. I hadn’t planned it at all, it just came about on a whim as I tried to decide how to get back to Brian’s perspective after two chapters away from him. From that point forward, I decided I wanted to hit 50 chapters to round off Volume 1. To ensure that, I planned the events that needed to happen in order to hit 50. The irony is that in the first year I wrote 26 chapters when I was winging it. The second year is pretty much the character chapters. All the years to follow are the ones I actually bothered planning for!
Chapters 41-50 were already claimed with their plots fully planned. That just left the chapters on the Sevii Islands. All I had to do was think of what would be fun to do on the islands and when that was decided I figured out the best ways to divvy them into the number of chapters I had left. When I realized Brian and Chane already had their own personal nemesis among the Rocket Executives, I gave Eve and Zack their own as well.
Fun fact: The reason the boat was so slow traveling in the first five chapters is because those chapters take place in Sinnoh and I was mocking the slow Surf speed in Diamond and Pearl. Platinum hadn’t come out yet so I had no idea the Surf speed would get fixed.
There are plenty more Easter Eggs in the story but I’ll leave them for you all to find and figure out. Let me know if you think you found some!
About the Characters:
At the earliest stage only a few human characters were planned. Brian, Madison, Strife Maxwell, Arthias, Prof. Himee, and Raiden. Eve was originally intended to be a one-shot, but I liked her so much I wanted to make her reoccurring. Chane and Zack came into being to round out Arka Squad as a Five Man Band. Fun fact: Arka Squad was made of five before I discovered TV Tropes which means I was unconsciously using the trope. Lt. Deter only existed because Raiden needed a superior and I wanted to show Neos is equal opportunity having a midget with a high rank. Skylar Eirwyn and Ken Feng came into existence to serve as counterparts to Raiden. Feng acting as the Fuujin to his Raijin and all three forming the Fire-Ice-Lightning Trio.
At first I only wanted to use original characters with natural hair colors. That was why Brian was so confused by Madison’s pink bangs in earlier chapters. With the introduction of Petrel to the scene and his purple hair, followed by the other Executives, and eventually Team Galactic, that notion went bye-bye. What this will mean for future OCs and future cameos, who can really say.
In Chapter 21: The Dream Team, there is an, at the time, unnamed female Rocket with status dressed in white who bears a resemblance to Executive Ariana. That’s because she is Ariana in a matter of speaking. That chapter was written before HeartGold and SoulSilver were a thing so the character was based on the “generic” female executive template of GSC. When HGSS did come out, she was retconned as a relative of Ariana’s bearing the name Charmaine, the name of the GSC female executive’s counterpart from the Pokémon Special manga. I retconned the name into the earlier chapter when I posted RoTN in the Corner.
The only villainous Teams not to appear or be mentioned so far are Team Plasma, Team Flare, and most recently Team Skull. Don’t worry, the former two will both make appearances, but not quite in the form you’d expect! Since Sun and Moon are still new, I am still figuring out how I want to handle Team Skull.
The first canonical appearance of a Gen V Pokémon was Samurott in Chapter 37: Trial of Ice and Water, right? Wrong! The first appearance was actually Cofagrigus in Chapter 31: Night of Masquerade. Brian mentioned seeing a coffin with black arms that looked fake. Black and White had just come out in Japan when that chapter was written. I was making fun of the designs!
Chapter 34: Combined Threat was written in 2011 long before ORAS was even an idea and Chapter 40: Broken Union was written before ORAS was released which is why Team Aqua retains their RSE designs and why Archie’s personality is more militant than it is in ORAS canon.
About the World:
The Pokémon World RoTN is set in is a darker take than what the games or manga portray. The story takes the apathetic citizens of the games who do nothing to stop the villainous teams, preferring to leave defeating them to the protagonists, and gives them a healthy dose of reality. What that leaves us with is a stage where the world government is a corrupt system with those in power living in decadence, the police have few resources, and those in the criminal underworld move about freely. Most Trainers can travel and roam wherever they want living normal lives with only the occasional encounter with the syndicates. Of course battles are much more violent with death being a very real possibility to both Pokémon and Trainers. When Black and White were announced I was hesitant on how to add the new features that came with it, eventually deciding to retain RoTN as a Gen IV fic. When Gen VI was announced I finally caved and decided to allow Gen V Pokémon while also making references to Unova. Kalos became tricky with the advent of Fairy-type, but I retconned that into the story when it came to the Corner and of course gave Arthias his Aegislash.
A question you all should be asking yourself is what is Kindsday? It’s a holiday Madison mentions in Chapter 5: Team Neos. As should be obvious by the context (this chapter is set in December) Kinsday is my analogue to Christmas just as Masquerade equates to Halloween. It is a holiday about kinship between family, friends, and of course their Pokémon. The holiday is celebrated on December 21st and involves gift giving and spending time with loved ones. Also there may be a fat man in a red suit who gives gifts to good boys and girls. Naturally 15-year-old Magical Girl Madison still believes in him much to Brian’s dismay.
About the Future:
With Arka Squad heading to Unova, there will definitely be more Gen V Pokémon making appearances and some characters may even get their teams shuffled a bit. Gen VI will also be represented though so far there are no plans for Arka Squad to travel to Kalos. Regarding Mega Evolution, I’m still holding out for Mega Infernape but if he doesn’t come out in a potential DPP remake (or ever if they don’t make any more Megas) I can rework my plans a bit. As for Gen VII, I’m still playing with ideas on how I want to represent Alola. Based on current trends Generation VIII is still at least three years away and given the geologic pace at which I write, I will have to figure out what I want to do with it when that comes out too. Hell, Gens IX and X might even be out by the time I finish this bloody story!

Our story begins! Brian and Axel meet Madison for the first time. Brian reluctantly begins training her in the ways of Pokémon. He also gets his first glimpse of the mysterious Team Neos.

Brian and Axel witness two members of Team Neos murder an accused member of Team Galactic. He and Madison are forced to battle the Neos members in self-defense. Afterward, Madison invites herself to become Brian’s travelling companion.
Over the next six months Brian begins to grow fond of his little tag-a-long and starts thinking of her as his adopted sister.

The conclusion of the Sinnoh League Tournament. Brian and Axel lose to Paul Shinji and his Torterra in the final round earning second place. That night they are invited to participate in the first ever White City Tournament.

Brian and Axel leave Madison behind since they can’t bring her to White City.

Brian and Axel arrive in White City. There they meet Strife Maxwell (though they don’t get his name right way)

Brian and Axel attend the tournament’s opening ceremonies but don’t have a match this day. Instead they visit Prof. Himee and Asuna at the White City Pokémon Lab.

Brian has his first match with Cal. Axel effortless crushes his team.

Brian has his third match with Goliath. It is a hard earned victory. Later that night Brian has his fourth match against Eve Illuminati. After an intensely fought match, Brian loses. After the battle, Brian and Axel are picked up by a man named Arthias who has been instructed to take them to meet Strife Maxwell. Strife formally introduces himself while laying startling information on Brian: the identity of Brian’s real father, Nathan Xelbu, and the fact that Strife is the leader of Team Neos. He invites Brian to join, then gives him a Beldum when Brian declines. After all that happened, Brian BSODs.
July 5
After spending most of the day moping like an emo sack of crap, Brian gets his ass kicked by Axel during a hurricane. The hurricane exists purely for Rule of Cool and no other reason. And don’t worry, the finals ended before the storm hit.

Brian and Axel pack up and leave White City after saying goodbye to Prof. Himee.

Brian and Axel return home to Pallet Town for a bit of a break.

And then they leave again for Johto.

After a comical reunion with Madison, the trio head for the Whirl Islands for vacation.

After claiming to have seen a large silver bird in the pre-dawn hours of the morning, Madison convinces Brian and Axel to explore the Whirl Island caves with her. Inside they hear the roar of Lugia but do not see the Legendary Bird.

Tragedy strikes when Madison is brutally murdered by two members of Team Rocket. Brian and Axel go on a roaring rampage of revenge slaughtering not just the Rockets responsible, but every Rocket in the area. Unbeknownst at the time, this is the first manifestation of Brian’s Dragon-forme.

After taking some time to regroup and properly plan a course of action, Brian returns to White City to accept Strife Maxwell’s earlier proposal that he join Team Neos.

Brian and Axel arrive in Goldenrod City to officially sign up for Team Neos. A four day training seminar begins. Eve was also recruited by Raiden Arka, a mentor of Brian’s.

The final day of training. Brian’s Dragon-forme activates again when he blocks an attack from an opponent’s Scyther. He is brought into Raiden’s personal squad along with Eve, Chane, and Zack.

The new squad members get acquainted with one another and get their new uniforms. They are sent on their first mission: to stop Team Rocket’s assault on the Route 34 Day Care.

Arka Squad travels to the Dragon’s Den for recon. Brian realizes something is wrong with him when he notices the wound he got from Scyther is fully healed without even a scar and after having an adverse reaction to a Dragon Fang found in Dragon’s Den.

With Raiden’s permission, Brian and Axel return once again to White City, this time to visit Prof. Himee. Prof. Himee and Asuna run a series of tests on Brian and learn that he is a Dragon-typed human who can change Forme, however he cannot control it yet. Now knowing what he is, Brian vows to learn to control his power.

Brian and Axel spend most of the day with Himee before flying to Ecruteak to reunite with the rest of the squad.

Arka Squad is assigned a mission to protect Johan Kaiser, the Johto Prime Minister’s son, from a kidnapping attempt by Team Rocket. They are assisted by Lieutenant Charles Deter and have their first encounter with a Rocket Executive, Petrel Lambda. Not only do the Phoenix Hotel ballroom and Tin Tower suffer significant damage, the laws of Physics are completely disrespected.

Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic, forms a pact with Archie and Giovanni, the leaders of Team Aqua and Team Rocket respectively, uniting their organizations into Team Triad.

Arka Squad gets a mission to intervene in Team Rocket activity in the Safari Zone. Here they are ambushed by the newly formed Team Triad and barely escape with their lives. Brian runs away from his squad consumed by rage at having not only suffered a loss at the hands of his enemies, but also from nearly getting killed by Eve’s careless use of Ice Beam against him.
March 29
Having spent his time training in the Johto Battle Frontier, Brian is found by Eve and made to return to the squad. Raiden puts him on probation for his recklessness and reminds him that Team Neos won’t accept resignations. Raiden then takes the squad to Team Neos’s underground base beneath Saffron City.
April 7
After weeks of preparation, the three Captains of Team Neos announce their counter strategy to stopping Team Triad once and for all. They decree that Team Neos hunt them down and leave no survivors. Squads were also to be reorganized to give them equal numbers with Team Triad groups.

Arka Squad, Eirwyn Squad, and Feng Squad are merged and ordered to each gather another squad of officers for tracking down Triad activity in the Sevii Islands.

The Sevii Unit is assembled and heads to One Island.

Sevii Unit thwarts Team Triad’s attempt at getting into the Pokémon Storage System marking their first victory against the combined might of Triad.

Sevii Unit eliminates members of Team Triad attacking the Four Island Day Care. Brian and Axel go to Icefall Cave for cold environment training accompanied by Zack and Lloyd. There they get in a battle with an Aqua couple named Sean and Abby. After that conflict, Brian gets challenged by an INTERPOL officer named Zachary to a battle. After winning they have dinner together.
April 18
Brian and Raiden receive a tip on the location of Team Rocket’s hideout on Chrono Island. Upon raiding the Rocket Warehouse, the team is separated thanks to the Spinner traps. Eve ends up in a battle with Rocket Executive Ariana Sham and wins. Team Neos succeeds in capturing the base but Ariana escapes.
April 19
Team Triad desperately tries to catch Moltres to once again gain the upper hand against Team Neos. Thanks to the timely intervention of the Sevii Unit and Zack’s training as a Pokémon Ranger, Team Triad is thwarted. However, Moltres is still captured by Ken Feng much to Zack’s shock and Raiden’s anger. While most of the Sevii Unit goes to the Ember Spa to celebrate a job well done, Arka Squad rents a hotel to deal with their own issues.
April 20
Early in the morning Sevii Unit goes to Resort Gorgeous to wipe out Teams Aqua and Galactic before they can relocate thus finally purging Team Triad from the Sevii Islands for good. The conflict lasted only ten days.

Zack and Skylar go out on a date.

Team Neos captures Team Rocket’s base in Mahogany Town, Johto.
June 19
Team Neos captures Team Galactic’s base in Eterna City, Sinnoh.

Team Neos captures Team Aqua’s main base off the coast of Lilycove City, Hoenn.

Team Neos raids the Veilstone City Team Galactic building. Cyrus reveals that he had only been using Team Rocket and Team Aqua and now plans to betray them to save himself. Giovanni however is one step ahead of him and betrays Cyrus and Archie first. After Giovanni’s escape, Archie and Cyrus are defeated by Captains Sinclair and Ross. With their bases captured and their leaders killed, Team Aqua and Team Galactic are defeated. Leader (Arthias) swears to bring down Giovanni himself.
June 29
Viridian City Gym is burned to the ground by rioters in protest of Giovanni being a Gym Leader.
July 1
Leader gathers the squads with the best records for a final assault on Team Rocket’s main base in Celadon City, Kanto; the Rocket Game Corner. The attack begins at midnight. Arka Squad is included in this blitzkrieg.
July 2
Midnight: Team Neos marches on the Game Corner for the final battle! Once inside however, they are scattered thanks to the Spinner traps. Brian has his final confrontation with Petrel Lambda and kills him with his bare hands. During the battle Beldum evolves into Metang. Chane has her final confrontation with Lance Proton. Proton is killed by his own Machoke after the torture he inflicted on the Pokémon. Eve has her final confrontation with Ariana Sham and has Diva kill the Executive. Zack does battle with Rocket Executive Archer Kurtz, Giovanni’s second in command. Putting all of his skills and guile to the test, Zack defeats the Executive. Archer kills Lt. Deter but his finished off by Lloyd after attempting to take Zack’s life as well. Raiden has a battle with Pierre Duvall, an assassin hired by Team Rocket to eliminate Team Neos. It is the first battle in a long time where Raiden actually had to go all out which excites him, but leaves him disappointed because he is also forced to kill his opponent to survive. Finally, Arthias curb-stomps Giovanni Terremoto and forces him to disband Team Rocket once and for all, thus bringing an end to the war.
Day: Brian asks Chane to help him and Axel evolve Riolu since the Emanation Pokémon wants to evolve but can only do so by Happiness during the day. After spending all day together nurturing their Pokémon, Brian, Axel and Chane watch proudly as Riolu evolves into Lucario and Lucy evolves into Blissey.
Night: When Brian, Axel, and Chane return to Raiden’s penthouse, they find Zack has opted to throw a party in celebration of Team Neos’s recent victory. Later on Brian gets a phone call from Raiden. Raiden has come home and is not happy about the party. He uses his new authority as a recently promoted Lieutenant to kick everyone out.
July 3
Brian wakes up in the morning to Chane screaming. Turns out Zack and Skylar had sex. Skylar asks Raiden if she can have Zack but he refuses. He needs all the members of his squad for the missions to come.
July 8
Leader hijacks every television network for a live broadcast. He publicly executes Giovanni who had been captured and then declares open war against the world government. He challenges the people to rise up and join the fight as well.

About the Story:
When I first came up with The Rise of Team Neos, only a few events were planned from the start. Brian meets Madison. The two bond over him training her. The two having their first battle against Team Neos. Brian getting invited to participate in the White City Tournament and leaving Madison behind. Brian’s first meeting with Strife Maxwell. Brian meeting and befriending Prof. Himee. Brian winning his first three battles in the tournament but losing the fourth. Brian learning about his father and Strife’s involvement in Team Neos from the man himself along with the ensuing BSOD. Brian reuniting with Madison. Madison’s death and the awakening of Dragon-forme. Brian joining Team Neos. Brian learning about his Dragon-forme.
That may seem like a lot but everything else that happened between those moments and even leading into those moments were either filler or repercussions of the events that transpired. I was basically winging it. After Brian joined Team Neos I had nothing planned until the eventual fall of Team Rocket. Around that time Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days came out so I used ideas from that and Crisis Core to come up with the different missions for the squad outside of their interventions against Team Rocket. Or rather I intended to but… meh. At the very least I wanted to build up the relationship between the new characters introduced at this time and flesh out their personalities a bit.
I had a few different ideas in my head for that, namely Zack flirting with a bishonen, something fun for Halloween, and shenanigans at a day spa. When Soul Silver came out, I evolved a Togetic. Its Pokédex data said it gets dispirited around negative emotions so I wanted to use that too. Those ideas eventually coalesced into the different character centric chapters with the plotlines behind them being direct results of previous actions taken by the characters. The fact that the infamous server crash happened at this exact moment paved the way for the fic’s future. See, Volume 1 was never supposed to get this long or in depth. But the more I wrote, the more ideas just kept pouring into me. Post-Fallout was the perfect opportunity to rework my previous plans for the story. Like I said, I was winging it.
The formation of Team Triad, the union between Rocket, Aqua, and Galactic, was completely spur of the moment. I hadn’t planned it at all, it just came about on a whim as I tried to decide how to get back to Brian’s perspective after two chapters away from him. From that point forward, I decided I wanted to hit 50 chapters to round off Volume 1. To ensure that, I planned the events that needed to happen in order to hit 50. The irony is that in the first year I wrote 26 chapters when I was winging it. The second year is pretty much the character chapters. All the years to follow are the ones I actually bothered planning for!
Chapters 41-50 were already claimed with their plots fully planned. That just left the chapters on the Sevii Islands. All I had to do was think of what would be fun to do on the islands and when that was decided I figured out the best ways to divvy them into the number of chapters I had left. When I realized Brian and Chane already had their own personal nemesis among the Rocket Executives, I gave Eve and Zack their own as well.
Fun fact: The reason the boat was so slow traveling in the first five chapters is because those chapters take place in Sinnoh and I was mocking the slow Surf speed in Diamond and Pearl. Platinum hadn’t come out yet so I had no idea the Surf speed would get fixed.
There are plenty more Easter Eggs in the story but I’ll leave them for you all to find and figure out. Let me know if you think you found some!
About the Characters:
At the earliest stage only a few human characters were planned. Brian, Madison, Strife Maxwell, Arthias, Prof. Himee, and Raiden. Eve was originally intended to be a one-shot, but I liked her so much I wanted to make her reoccurring. Chane and Zack came into being to round out Arka Squad as a Five Man Band. Fun fact: Arka Squad was made of five before I discovered TV Tropes which means I was unconsciously using the trope. Lt. Deter only existed because Raiden needed a superior and I wanted to show Neos is equal opportunity having a midget with a high rank. Skylar Eirwyn and Ken Feng came into existence to serve as counterparts to Raiden. Feng acting as the Fuujin to his Raijin and all three forming the Fire-Ice-Lightning Trio.
At first I only wanted to use original characters with natural hair colors. That was why Brian was so confused by Madison’s pink bangs in earlier chapters. With the introduction of Petrel to the scene and his purple hair, followed by the other Executives, and eventually Team Galactic, that notion went bye-bye. What this will mean for future OCs and future cameos, who can really say.
In Chapter 21: The Dream Team, there is an, at the time, unnamed female Rocket with status dressed in white who bears a resemblance to Executive Ariana. That’s because she is Ariana in a matter of speaking. That chapter was written before HeartGold and SoulSilver were a thing so the character was based on the “generic” female executive template of GSC. When HGSS did come out, she was retconned as a relative of Ariana’s bearing the name Charmaine, the name of the GSC female executive’s counterpart from the Pokémon Special manga. I retconned the name into the earlier chapter when I posted RoTN in the Corner.
The only villainous Teams not to appear or be mentioned so far are Team Plasma, Team Flare, and most recently Team Skull. Don’t worry, the former two will both make appearances, but not quite in the form you’d expect! Since Sun and Moon are still new, I am still figuring out how I want to handle Team Skull.
The first canonical appearance of a Gen V Pokémon was Samurott in Chapter 37: Trial of Ice and Water, right? Wrong! The first appearance was actually Cofagrigus in Chapter 31: Night of Masquerade. Brian mentioned seeing a coffin with black arms that looked fake. Black and White had just come out in Japan when that chapter was written. I was making fun of the designs!
Chapter 34: Combined Threat was written in 2011 long before ORAS was even an idea and Chapter 40: Broken Union was written before ORAS was released which is why Team Aqua retains their RSE designs and why Archie’s personality is more militant than it is in ORAS canon.
About the World:
The Pokémon World RoTN is set in is a darker take than what the games or manga portray. The story takes the apathetic citizens of the games who do nothing to stop the villainous teams, preferring to leave defeating them to the protagonists, and gives them a healthy dose of reality. What that leaves us with is a stage where the world government is a corrupt system with those in power living in decadence, the police have few resources, and those in the criminal underworld move about freely. Most Trainers can travel and roam wherever they want living normal lives with only the occasional encounter with the syndicates. Of course battles are much more violent with death being a very real possibility to both Pokémon and Trainers. When Black and White were announced I was hesitant on how to add the new features that came with it, eventually deciding to retain RoTN as a Gen IV fic. When Gen VI was announced I finally caved and decided to allow Gen V Pokémon while also making references to Unova. Kalos became tricky with the advent of Fairy-type, but I retconned that into the story when it came to the Corner and of course gave Arthias his Aegislash.
A question you all should be asking yourself is what is Kindsday? It’s a holiday Madison mentions in Chapter 5: Team Neos. As should be obvious by the context (this chapter is set in December) Kinsday is my analogue to Christmas just as Masquerade equates to Halloween. It is a holiday about kinship between family, friends, and of course their Pokémon. The holiday is celebrated on December 21st and involves gift giving and spending time with loved ones. Also there may be a fat man in a red suit who gives gifts to good boys and girls. Naturally 15-year-old Magical Girl Madison still believes in him much to Brian’s dismay.
About the Future:
With Arka Squad heading to Unova, there will definitely be more Gen V Pokémon making appearances and some characters may even get their teams shuffled a bit. Gen VI will also be represented though so far there are no plans for Arka Squad to travel to Kalos. Regarding Mega Evolution, I’m still holding out for Mega Infernape but if he doesn’t come out in a potential DPP remake (or ever if they don’t make any more Megas) I can rework my plans a bit. As for Gen VII, I’m still playing with ideas on how I want to represent Alola. Based on current trends Generation VIII is still at least three years away and given the geologic pace at which I write, I will have to figure out what I want to do with it when that comes out too. Hell, Gens IX and X might even be out by the time I finish this bloody story!
