Spritework: Rowan

StellarWind Elsydeon I haven't posted any new art in a dog's age as I've been struggling with a block from oblivion. But I managed to smash pixels together today so hey.

This is Rowan, one of my D&D characters. They're a warlock whose otherworldly patron is an exo-planar plant entity that seeks knowledge of other planes by means of forming symbioses with like-minded beings who dwell in these planes. Rowan carries with them a small sapling of this exoplanar being - a 'seed' of the greater plant - which, with time, shall take new shapes and enable them to tap into new, interesting abilities (under Hexblade rules with slightly modified flavor text).

Shiny: The shading was honestly a whole lot of hax - I selected all the segments that weren't the outlines, copied them into an additional layer and shaded them the way I do pictures - using soft brushes, multiply and screen layers - then merged, the set into one layer, posterized it to give it the pixelly sort of effect, then applied some more level/multiply/screen layer business to further increase the contrast. I actually tried doing a more traditional pixel-art shading on the robe based on the results of that whole process - but couldn't quiiiiiite get it right, so ended up just leaving the hax approach in the final sprite. It's not exactly classic pixel art approach and that would mean it probably has way more colours than would be allowed in, say, an actual Pokémon game sprite - but this was mostly made for using-as-a-Roll20-token purposes so being sort of a 'hybrid' style doesn't impede it all that much.

The robe itself I basically just ended up drawing and then outlining with pixels and applying a whole damn lot of pixel moving to get it to flow right. Tedious but I quite like the end result. ^^

The magic was actually a fairly simple process and only used three colors (and white). Light purple sphere, light green sphere inside it, white sphere inside that, add little pixel zigzags to taste in a lighter green, line the edge of the lighter green with the purple for that delicious octarine fade effect. Felt right for an Eldritch Blast. ^^
