From the Frying-Pan into the Fire

by TooBlue12

TooBlue12 A one-shot featuring an OC I have for RWBY, and my entry for the Inked Hearts Writing Festival contest.
The waves crashed loudly along with swiftly supplying strong kicks against the small wooden lifeboat. It swayed dangerously threatening to launch the poor young female sailor off into the dark and freezing waters.

The rain and wind soaked her with no remorse. They felt like ice cold needles shooting at her from above and all around.

She was unable to hear anything but the waves and wind. She could barely see as she tried to keep the lifeboat afloat and in control. Mei had so many regrets at the moment but didn’t focus on them. There were much more important things to pay attention to during her struggles.

The boat had started to fill with even more water. Sure the waves were bad, but the water hadn’t come from them. The boat had to have a leak.

Mei acted quickly using a bucket to dump the water out and start searching for the location of the hole.

Her eyes stung from the splashing of waves and salt water. This caused her to take longer than she would have liked to find the root of her newest problem.

As she finished plugging the deadly and nuisance of a hole she stood up. That was a very unwise and foolish decision as the next wave nearly made her fall overboard. She quickly panicked and grabbed hold of the side of the lifeboat and bent back down. The quick instinct and reaction saved her from falling into the icy depths of the sea. Although it caused her to drop the tool she had in her had into the water surrounding the rocking boat.

“Agh! No! Oh come on?!” Mei shouted angrily. At least she had fixed the leak, but if she were to have anymore she wouldn’t be able to fix them due to losing the important tool.

Just when she thought the situation couldn’t get worse, fate seemed to think otherwise. Loud earsplitting screeches could be heard from a small island rock formation housing some nests, presumably belonging to the creatures that were screeching.

The lifeboat was being pushed by the waves right towards it. At this rate, she would crash right into the rocks and nests.

The large bird-like creatures weren’t very happy with that. Neither was Mei though! She swiftly jumped into action and tried to steer the boat away from the rock. She narrowly missed crashing into the small island and the boat scraped against the rocks some.

She was relieved her boat didn’t crash into the island, but the creatures weren’t so thrilled about her even coming near them.

The bird-like creatures came after her and started swooping down at her and attacking her.

Mei could barely see them due to all that was happening, but she was able to make out that they had eel-like bodies with bird wings and talons. They were mainly black coloring with white bone-like spines sticking out of their backs. They had red piercing eyes. It was obvious they were a type of grim.

As they flew towards her and started attacking she retaliated and fought back. She pulled out her trusted weapon and started firing the shotgun and cutlass combination at them. It fired the standard and commonly used Schnee dust powered ammo. She used the cutlass part on the grim when they were too close.

The aggravated flock of Grimm didn’t give up though. They continued to barrage her and attack her with their talons.

If it weren’t for her weapon and aura she would be bird food by now.

Mei continued to try and fight them off but she started getting lower and lower on ammo and her defensive aura.

Aura is known all throughout Remnant due to how it is the manifestation of one's soul and created a natural protective barrier that prevented harm to those who learn how to use it. That was the only reason she wasn’t seriously harmed by now.

However, Mei’s aura was depleting quickly, and so was her ammo. The creatures of Grimm persisted to fly at her and attack her, the waves continued to bash against the boat, and the wind and rain proceeded to come at her from all angles.

All the while behind Mei in the far distance a large ship started sailing towards where the young sailor was fending for herself.

As Mei aimed at another one of the grim her stomachs dropped like a stone as she heard the click of her gun signifying that it was out of ammo.

This was bad, but she didn’t have too much time to mull over that fact as the creatures continued attacking her. She did her best to attack them with the blade of her weapon, but it wasn’t as effective as the gun.

Mei was unable to dodge efficiently either due to being on the small boat, or maneuver well to attack from many different possible angles. Just avoiding falling off the boat was what she had to focus a majority of her attention on.

Without any warning, loud cannon fire was heard and some of the grim were destroyed before her eyes. Mei looked behind her and saw the large ship with cannons all along the side of it somewhat behind her.

The rest of the grim screeched before flying off. She had been saved from them, if that was their intention her not she did not know. A feeling in her gut told her she would be finding out soon.
