Chapter 5- "A New Challenger"

Jonathan arose from his slumber to find that his Pokemon were already up and at it. Riolu and Froakie were sparring with each other, parrying attacks and sending them back. Fletchling was flying through the trees, diving in and out of them, perching for mere seconds to catch its breath before taking to flight once again. The Trainer meandered out of the tent to observe their training even further. Riolu was still sparring with Froakie, but they had kept their distance as Froakie launched Water attacks at the Fighting Type. Fletchling was still working on its maneuvers, but they became smoother the more it did them.

Jonathan quickly pulled out a red cap, a purple leather coat, a black T-shirt, some jeans, and some tennis shoes, changing into them rapidly before walking out of his tent.

"Good work, guys!" Jonathan called unenergetically. He let out a yawn and stretched as his Pokémon came to rest. "You guys were doing great out there!"

"Ree!" Riolu yipped in glee.

"Froakie Froa!" Froakie exclaimed.

Fletchling stopped to perch on Jonathan's shoulder, chirping in jubilation the whole time. "Fletchling fletch fletch!"

Jonathan chuckled. "I'm really proud of you guys, but I do have some advice for your training. Riolu, Froakie, if you have to get up close during battle, make sure not to delay your hard-hitting attacks. The opponent will most likely find an opening and punish you for it." Riolu and Froakie nodded, then proceeded to stretch for a little bit. "Fletchling, I noticed your flying has really improved. However, if you have to dive to avoid an attack, make sure not to dive incredibly low. You're a Flying-Type Pokémon, and you do the best in the air, so make sure to stay in it."

"Fletch!" the Robin Pokémon chirped in response.

"Alright, you guys did great, but I think you need some rest," Jonathan affirmed, pulling out two Poke Balls. "Froakie, Fletchling, return." The two balls opened, shooting out a beam of red light and enveloping the two Pokémon in it, before the beam retracted into the ball. The ball closed slowly, remaining idle. "Okay, Riolu, I think it's time we find the others and head out towards that Gym!"

Jonathan packed up his belongings, ate a macaroon that he had stored from Lumiose, and with Riolu by his side, had left the camping site without a trace of its existence. He walked the forest aimlessly, feeling rather relaxed. There were many Pokémon chirping and humming in the trees, and the Pokémon on the ground were gathering berries. There was a warm, green glow in the forest from the sunlight passing through the canopy of the forest.

Riolu suddenly heard a noise, and tried getting his Trainer to listen to it. "Alright, good job!" Jonathan heard. It was a fair distance away, but it was a voice he recognized. "Let's work on that again, okay?" it exclaimed. The two followed the voice, and it got louder each time it spoke again. Soon, they walked into a big, open space to find the source of the voice. It was a short girl with long, wavy hair and pale skin. She was wearing a purple sports cap, and had her hair pulled back into a ponytail. She was wearing a purple T-shirt, denim shorts, and black tennis shoes.

Is that Olivia? Jonathan thought. And why the hell is she up so early? The Trainer walked closer, then got an evil smirk on his face. When the girl picked up her water bottle and started to drink from it, Jonathan whispered in her ear. "Hey," he said slyly.

Olivia yelped, causing her Pokémon to yelp as well in excitement. Olivia spilled a bit of water on her shirt, but nothing too major. "Geez, Jonathan!" Olivia called. "At least warn me when you do stuff like that!" she commanded. "Now my shirt's all wet!"

"If I warned you, it wouldn't be funny," Jonathan remarked as he winked, keeping his quiet, edgy voice. Olivia then grumbled as Jonathan chuckled. "Also, it's not that wet. It'll dry later. I see that you have a new Pokémon," he commented, changing the subject.

Olivia slightly blushed. "Oh yeah," she said. "This is Pikachu. It's an amazing dancer, and I've incorporated its dance into my routine!"

"Pikachu, huh?" Jonathan said, getting a closer look. Pikachu then zapped Jonathan with a weak bolt of electricity. "Ouch!" Jonathan cried.

Olivia chuckled. "Now we're even," the girl said quietly.

"Fennekin Fen," the Fox Pokémon giggled.

Jonathan then smiled at Olivia sarcastically. His face then lit up as he took out a Poke Ball. "I just forgot! I got a new Pokémon as well!" he cried, releasing the Pokémon from inside. It appeared to be a tiny cardinal or robin-like Pokémon. "Meet Fletchling!" Jonathan cheered.

"Fletch!" the Tiny Robin Pokémon cried.

"Aw," Olivia exclaimed. "When did you guys meet?" Olivia asked.

"Well, Riolu, Froakie and I were just wandering the forest yesterday, trying to see if we could find another Pokémon to train. I found this guy getting attacked, and I decided to help it fight back." Jonathan responded. "And, I guess it likes me a lot, so it let me catch it." Jonathan added.

Olivia smiled. "That sounds like you," she mumbled. "Ever since I knew you, you always stood up for the little guy. Anyways, I got Pikachu while practicing," Olivia said, chuckling. "This little fella came over and danced for me, and said it wanted to be caught. I mean, not really, it just said 'Pika pi!'. But still," Olivia chuckled awkwardly.

"Cool," Jonathan commented. "Hey, have you seen Miles?" he asked.

"No, actually," Olivia responded, almost apologetically. "He's probably doing something else, but I'll go find him. Fennekin, Pikachu, return!" Olivia cried, pulling out their Poke Balls. A red beam shot out from the balls, enveloping the two Pokémon. The beam retracted to the balls and they closed slowly. "See you soon!" Olivia called, jogging away from their rendezvous area.

The trio had met up and left the forest, taking in the beauty of Santalune City. "Wow, it's a nice place," Jonathan commented in awe. "For a city with a Gym, it sure seems like a quaint area."

"That sure does fit the bill," Miles stated in exasperation.

"Well, let's get going!" Olivia exclaimed, running off towards the city.

"Okay, I guess we're following her now," Jonathan mumbled, walking down the road at a leisurely pace.

Along the path, Jonathan saw a little boy wandering around in the grass. He looked very frail, and he had curly brown hair and fair skin. He was wearing a cyan hoodie and black sweatpants. The boy was bent over, searching for something in the grass. He then stood up again and turned around. His face lit up and he rushed towards Jonathan, eager about something. He jumped around in excitement in front of Jonathan, yelling, "I wanna battle you please! Please!"

Jonathan, very confused by this gesture, took out a Poke Ball. "Sure, I guess," he said with uncertainty. He threw out a Poke Ball, sending out his Fletchling. "Are you ready?" he asked.

"Yeah," the boy cried. He threw out a Poke Ball as well, releasing a raccoon-like Pokémon with brown and white fur that was very spiky and poorly groomed. "This is Zippy the Zigzagoon. He's really strong, so you won't have an easy time battling us."

"Okay, you get the first move," Jonathan stated.

"Alright, Zippy, use Tackle!" the boy called. The boy's Zigzagoon started running toward the Flying Type before jumping.

"Fletchling, dodge and use Peck!" Fletchling maneuvered out of Zippy's line of fire, making it vulnerable. Fletchling then swooped down and drilled its beak into the Raccoon Pokémon's side.

"Zigzagoon!" Zippy screamed.

"Zippy, you okay?" the hoodie-clad Trainer asked.

"Zig!" the Normal Type affirmed, assuming a battle stance.

"Awesome! Now, use Headbutt!" the boy cried. "Full throttle, go!" Zippy lunged for its target headfirst, hoping to land a hit. However, Jonathan had a plan.

"Fletchling, flap your wings as fast as you can!" Jonathan called. Fletchling did so, creating a small gust which slowed down its opponent. "Nice! Now, use Peck, once more!" Fletchling stopped flapping its wings and instantly drilled its beak into Zippy's noggin. "Nice work, buddy!"

Zippy was sent flying and skidded on the ground. It struggled to get up, but still did so. "Alright," the boy called. "Use San Attack!" Zippy shot a pile of dirt at Fletchling, and it got stuck in its eyes. "Nice shot, Zippy!"

Fletchling flailed around, doing its best to get the dirt out of its eyes. "C'mon, Fletchling, don't let a bit of dirt stop you!" Jonathan encouraged. "Use Tackle! Go!" Fletchling lunged at the ground, and missed its target by a foot. "Okay, Fletchling, get up!" Fletchling got out of the hole it made, and continued to flail around. Eventually, it shook the dirt out of its eyes and attacked the Raccoon Pokémon again. "Way to go, Fletchling!" Jonathan cried.

"Now, Zippy, use Tackle!" Zippy charged into the Tiny Robin Pokémon, sending it backward.

"Fletchling, use Quick Attack!" Jonathan called excitedly. Fletchling swooped in on its opponent and attacked with its feet, clawing into Zippy's side. "Awesome, buddy!" Jonathan called.

"Zig..." Zippy cried. It struggled to stand, wincing in pain as it put in its best efforts to do. "Zigzagoon," it moaned as it fell to the ground, motionless.

"Aw man," its Trainer whined, returing the Normal Type. "Great battle," he told Jonathan.

"Anytime!" Jonathan smiled.

"Fennekin, Pikachu, jump!" Olivia called. Fennekin jumped in the air in almost perfect sync with Pikachu, and they both did a backflip. They then landed on the ground with ease. "Now, Fennekin, use Ember, and Pikachu, Thunder Shock!" A small burst of electricity and fire shot up in the air, and they both collided to create a shower of sparkles. Then, the Fox Pokémon and the Mouse Pokémon began to dance, along with its Trainer. After performing a few spins and a jump, Fennekin and Pikachu were vaulted off of Olivia's arms. "Use Ember and Thunder Shock, once more!" the same maneuvers were performed, and the outcome was the same. A shower of sparkles came from the flame and electricity's combination.

"Pika!" Pikachu cried.

"Fennekin!" Fennekin exclaimed.

"Great work, you two!" Olivia cheered. "Now we'll be ready for Cherveux Town! Princess Key Number one, here I come!"

Miles was tending to his Pokémon as they sat still, relaxing from a previous long night. "You guys are beat," the boy observed. He then pulled out two Oran Berries, giving one to each of his Pokémon. "We've got a big day today. Olivia's Showcase is tonight, and knowing Jonathan, his Gym Battle's coming up soon," he added.

Chespin nodded in agreement. "Pin," it stated.

"Kakuna," Kakuna added.

"I still don't know what I plan to do," Miles said. He then pondered aloud, "Maybe I should help the Professor once this is all over... I don't know," Miles said.

Jonathan and Olivia were relaxing in the Pokémon Center in Santalune. There was a short line at a round reception desk, where a woman wearing a white bandana emblazoned with a Poke Ball and a pink dress stood. She also had long, pink hair that was divided into pigtails. They both got in the line once it cleared up.

"Hello," the lady said. "My name is Nurse Joy. May I help you?" she asked.

"Yes," Jonathan said. "I would like to register for the Pokémon League," Jonathan said.

"Okay, then, head over there," Joy said, pointing at a small web camera standing on one side of the desk. Jonathan did so and took off his cap. "Smile!" she exclaimed as the web camera clicked. Then, a screen popped up out of thin air, and it showed a lot of data. Joy tapped the screen in certain places, and soon, the screen vanished. Then, a card and a case appeared behind Joy, who picked them up and handed them to Jonathan. "Here you go! Your Trainer Card and Badge Case!" Joy exclaimed.

"Thank you!" Jonathan responded, opening his bag and putting his Badge Case in there. He then grabbed his wallet and put his Trainer Card in a slot. "Could you possibly heal my Pokémon as well?" Jonathan asked, unaware of the overly impatient Olivia behind him.

"Sure!" she exclaimed as Jonathan took out his Poke Balls and handed them, along with Riolu, to Joy. "I'll be back in a minute!" she added.

Jonathan looked at his Badge Case in excitement. Finally, I'm registered for the League, Jonathan thought. Soon, I'll be able to fight some of the strongest Trainers in the world and have the chance to be Champion. Jonathan heard a catchy tune, catching him off guard, and looked up at the source of the sound. "Jonathan!" Joy called. "Your Pokémon are ready!" she called.

"Riolu!" the Emanation Pokémon cried, jumping into its Trainer's arms. "Riolu Riolu!"

"Hey, buddy!" Jonathan cheered, sitting down on a couch.

Olivia then walked up to a counter. "Hello, Joy," she greeted. "Can I register for the Cherveux Pokémon Showcase here?" she asked.

"Yes, you can," Joy replied, pulling out a clipboard. "Just sign your name on this paper, and you'll be in the contest!" she added, handing Olivia a blue pen. Olivia did so and handed the pen back to Joy. "Thank you!" the Nurse said.

"Thank you!" Olivia replied. She walked back to Jonathan with a grin on her face. "Yes!" she exclaimed. "I'm so excited!" she squealed, failing to contain her excitement. "The contest is tonight and I'm in it!"

Jonathan looked at his companion and couldn't help but smile. "Well, I guess we'd better head off to the Gym," he stated. "What better time to knock it out than now?" he asked.

"I agree," Olivia remarked. "I'll tell Miles to meet us there," she added.

"Okay," Jonathan affirmed, strolling out of the Pokémon Center.

Jonathan then stood in front of the Santalune Gym. His first Gym Battle was about to take place. 'Here I go,' he thought. 'I haven't been preparing for that long, but the time is now and this is it.' Then, as he finished his thought, a short, blonde-haired woman with a white tank top and green cargo pants walked out of the building. She wore a camera around her neck as well. "Hello," Jonathan said. "Do you know where the Santalune Gym Leader is?" he asked.

"As a matter of fact, I am the Gym Leader," the woman responded. "My name's Viola. Nice to meet you, challenger," she added, putting out a hand. Jonathan shook it in immediate response. "Why don't you follow me? I'm excited for this Gym Battle," Viola said.

The trio followed Viola through the door, and they were greeted with a gallery room, full with pictures of Bug Type Pokémon.

Miles gasped. "Did you take these pictures yourself?" he asked in amazement.

"Yes, I did," Viola responded. "I'm a professional photographer, and my biggest focus is Bug Pokémon."

Olivia's eyes grew wide. "Amazing!" she cried, gaping at a Metapod's breaking cocoon.

"Thank you!" Viola replied. She then looked at Jonathan. "Well, let's get this Gym Battle started, don't you think?" she asked her challenger.

"Alright!" Jonathan cheered.

Viola and Jonathan stood at a battlefield, facing each other. The battlefield was in a greenhouse, and there were tress full of Bug Pokémon.

Then, a tall woman with brown hair wearing a black shirt and khaki pants walked up to the referee post. "This battle is between Viola, the Santalune Gym Leader, and Jonathan, the challenger," she started. "Each trainer is allowed two Pokémon, but only the challenger is enabled substitutions. The battle ends when both Pokémon on either side are unable to continue, or by any unexpected chance of forfeit. Now, Trainers, release your Pokémon!"

"Go, Surskit!" Viola cried.

"Go, Froakie!" Jonathan called.

Surskit was a short Pokémon standing on its four limbs, with a blue, spherical body, small pink eyes, and a yellow antenna. "Surskit, the Pond Skater Pokémon," Jonathan's Pokedex rang. "The oils in Surskit's feet allow it to skate on ponds. This Pokémon's antenna is used to call other of its kind."

"Battle begin!" The referee cried.
